It was pretty standard stuff, yeah. Most of the audio samples for first party games are regular old 16bit wavs. Not too different from today's stuff

You've opened a can of worms, but I would suggest a shotgun mic. You can go a long way with an inexpensive one.
Alternatively grab a portable linear PCM recorder if you want something you can keep in your pocket. Hope that helps in your next game about shapes or colors.
99% of the issues I run into with my own plugin are in FL, and 95% of those are on Mac, and I'm not even trying to make a native FL plugin so like, I sympathize but also congrats on your heart of steel
