V-Dem v.16 is now released, w. updated scores for 2025.

Most countries remain stable from 2024, but some clear improvements (on diff’t democracy indices), incl. S. Korea, Sri Lanka & Mauritius.

Largest declines came, by far, in the US.

This figure shows 10-yr changes on the Liberal Dem. index.

🚨 New study by @ingvildzinober.bsky.social on the “green gender gap” in Europe finds women are more supportive of green policies and parties than men. This gap persists even after controlling for education, occupation, and location – pointing to deeper gendered value differences.

Nice! Thank you.

Cool, cool, this I can investigate. For example, there are country differences in the average scores on the femininity and masculinity measures in ESS Round 11. That could potentially be used to infer how gender-traditional a country is.

BTW! Gender Threat, what a very important inspiration for my dissertation 💞

Agree! I could go a little deeper into the ESS data round 11 to examine country-specific patterns before submitting Chapter 3 (Paper 3) of the dissertation for publication. Do you have any hypotheses about what I might find?

To argue that environmentalism is implicitly associated with femininity, I draw on theoretical insights from disciplines outside political science. However, I also find some empirical support for my claim. Norwegian students consistently rank the Norwegian Green Party as the most feminine party.

This is exactly what I find in my dissertation! Looking at data from Norway and ESS 11. I find that men who self-identify with a traditional gender role identity are less green compared to non-traditional men. I argue that this is because green politics issues are implicitly linked to femininity.

Exactly. Too often gender is treated as noise rather than something to explain. In my work, I argue that it is not something to control away but a political phenomenon that needs theorising. That said, when we include gender as a covariate in an OLS model, what would be correct terminology?

Finally, I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this project! In particular, @simonhix.bsky.social, @peterla.bsky.social, @chknutsen.bsky.social and of course my super proofreader wife @ninniz.bsky.social.

This suggests that the political outcomes of the Green Gender Gap are shaped by country-specific contexts, such as party-system characteristics, issue salience, and the availability of credible green political alternatives.

But when looking at support for green parties, a clear regional divide emerges. In Northern and Western Europe, men are less likely to support green parties. In Southern and Central/Eastern Europe, there is no clear voting gap, despite women holding greener views than men.

Next, I find the Green Gender Gap is not a Western European phenomenon. Across Southern and Central/Eastern Europe, men consistently express less concern about climate and environmental issues than women.

Still controlling for gender without thinking about why? You can cite me💚👩‍🔬💚

I show that the gender gap in progressive climate and environmental views is a persistent empirical regularity that cannot be explained by differences in socioeconomic background, political ideology, or risk aversion.

I just started to watch mid speech, and the first thing I heard was "they call me daddy" 😐

Very happy to see this out in CPS! We study class identities and their social and political relevance over several decades in Britain, Denmark, Norway, and the US. A small thread:

Understanding the Green Gender Gap PhD thesis defence by Ingvild Zinober

One of my greatest struggles is writing these self-promoting posts. They’re important for helping people find your work, but I never quite know what to say. So I’ll go with what feels most natural. I’m super, super proud of myself, and I think my work is pretty cool and innovative! Sooo check it out
