Still will need extensive testing to see if this has any side effects, and I need a way to automatically patch the game to do this instead of manually changing the debugger, but this seems like a really promising approach!

progress update...

now that I have the subtitles, it's really clear how they work and how they tie into cutscene timing. by adjusting the arguments to certain control opcodes, I can speed through the cutscenes instead of waiting for voice lines to finish.
