I got to try a friend's rifle with an Elcan on it and discovered I do not like the Elcan at all! I had to have my eye nearly touching the glass to actually see through it and wound up just opting for the top-mounted red dot instead. It looks cool af, but functionally not for me. Lots of money saved.

There's smaller lessons too but they're more easily solved like, buy a better wind-protection layer or add more grip tape to my magazines so I don't accidentally send them flying when I yank them out of a chest rig lol

Finally, and this is the one most important to me because it's a safety issue, there was one moment where I broke the 180 degree rule without realizing it (muzzle was pointed at the ground in front of me but still) and now I know I really need to practice maintaining conscious control while moving.

Similarly, I had a few malfunctions during reloads (Closed bolt + fully loaded mag = tough time seating and malfunctions) I was not prepared to clear the malfunction and now know I need to train for clearing various malfunctions.

My sling was rubber banded to my rifle for retention, but it was a little loose and got blown by the wind enough to interfere with the charging handle. Wouldn't have foreseen this as an issue without getting out there and experiencing it.

Getting out there and running gun matches (pistol, rifle, 2 gun, etc) is a great way to find out where your skills need improvement, what works and what doesn't with your gear setup, and build familiarity moving your gun in a deliberate way. I learned a lot at the range today, well worth the trip.
