“I understand that there are some people here for whom the answer to that balance is no surveillance ever—turn it all off,” she said. “That’s not where I’m at at the moment, and I also don’t think that’s where Seattle residents, speaking broadly, are at.”

I'm at a watch party for a virtual town hall with Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson hosted by a group of campaign supporters who are disappointed in her turn toward supporting surveillance. More people on the zoom than here in person on a sunny afternoon—baffling!

Capacity will be limited to the first 300 letter-signers to arrive at Stoup, and the first 500 letter-signers that call into the Zoom call. We had 1,355 of Katie’s campaign supporters sign the letter so show up early (5pm!) to make sure you get in before we have to cut off due to capacity.

When Cameras Go Dark, Accountability
Disappears
Seattle paused public safety cameras. Here's the real impact
• At Aurora & 105th, a major crash — most cameras caught fragments. •RTCC cameras captured the entire scene.
• That footage showed the driver fleeing -and led to him being charged with felony hit-and-run.
• Without it? No proof. • With it? Accountability.
• This isn't about immigration. * It's about solving crimes and protecting victims.
• Don't take tools away from investigators.•
Keep public safety cameras in place.
The full picture matters.

The Seattle police union is openly lobbying Mayor Katie Wilson to keep expanding surveillance cameras—here, by implying that they never solved hit-and-runs before they got their own cameras 9 months ago. It's a cynical campaign that assumes people are stupid, forgetful, or both.
