it works like gambling.
Simply, when you are in tiktok you get a random video that may interest you or not. That addictive element is what makes it feel special.
And the interface is made around this concept.

What is the secret sauce that makes tiktok so addictive.
A lot of people say that after the tiktokban nobody will replicate the algorithm.
I will say that both YouTube and Instagram have replicated or even improved on it. But still tiktok hits different.
Because of a secret ingredient: (cont)

Takeaways:
Keep it simple.
Use presets and tried and true arrangements.
Keep few elements into focus and build everything else around them.
I did so with vocals, bass, drums and lead and used everything else for ambience.
Just stop when you feel it is good enough.

I added some effects, paced it and built the arrangement around it.
And I was done. 8/8

Then I had this idea.
What if I add some spoken words parts to fill the empty spaces.
So I came up with this simple story about a renegade cyborg asking a boy to help him take revenge on the corp that ruined their life (everyday, relatable lyrics are important) and recorded a monologue.

Then added a pad and some risers and various effects low in the mix as ear candy.
Finally, I came up with a super simple lead line using just 3 notes (E, F, D)
But there was still something missing... 6/8

Then I added some basic drums.
While coming up with ideas I had four different apps but they were not exactly working.
Through mixing they ended up sounding like short percussive clangs so I added all four of them low in the mix, creating some sort of evolving percussion. 5/8

Then I added a subbass layer and a plucky wide layer following that bass.
Then I added a slower bass pattern to change tempo.
That was one hour in the project 4/8

I had a vital cyberpunk bass preset that I used.
I followed an ebm bass line tutorial (octave jumps and moving one semitone, from E to F).
Then I made a small variation of it and used them. 3/8

It all started with the strongest motivation and artist can have: pettiness.
Someone in my critique group said that cyberpunk should be exclusively 100 BPM so I got angry and went "I will make the most basic cyberpunk 2/8

People often ask me if you need to know music theory to create music, and I always tell them, absolutely not. You should think about how music theory isn’t a set of rules? It’s more like a map to help you find your way when you’re lost. And to make things faster. Its easier if you know music theory!

I believe that some years ago it was an anything goes approach, while today we get over specific subsubgenres and boxes we have to fill to get playlisted.
