I am outraged by this. How dare UM flagrantly disregard the principles of education by intimidating its studentsāand using their tuition fees to do it!
Iāve said it before and Iāll say it againāTrump and his cronies are not the problem. America has been sliding into fascism for years now.
Iām glad that the Guardian has identified the clear connections between the rhetoric of the speeches made by Starmer and Enoch Powell. I thought we were 57 years past ārivers of bloodā, but evidently notā¦
Let there be no mincing words. We have reached and stepped over a red line. The Trump administration is now deporting US citizens.
Terrifying. I learned about the Gestapo when I was in school, and it was always presented as a vestige of a dangerous past. Little did I know then that the United States would become that past.
Breaking News: The Trump administration moved to cancel lawfully obtained Social Security numbers in an effort to pressure immigrants to āself deportā by cutting people off from using crucial financial services like bank accounts and credit cards, along with their access to government benefits.
Anyone with some understanding how the US economy works knows that it needs immigrant labour to run. Now with violent anti-immigrant policies in the US, Republicans are turning to child labour to keep economies going. In what kind of horror are we?
I saw @lauronkehrer.bsky.social post about attending this!
We absolutely cannot look away from this.
Again, the point appears to be to inflict harm on students and international scholarsāthose unlikely to have enough savings to get by. America continues its race to the bottom.
Trump has his brownshirts and now an enormous brown-noser sitting with him in the White House. I am embarrassed to see the PM feeding Trumpās ego like this. It wonāt work, Sir Keir!
āTrump is treating the law as coterminous with his own desires.ā A terrific piece in the Atlantic on Trumpās fashioning of himself as kingāin action and in language.
I know a lot of artists who will no longer be applying for NEA grants because of these new guidelines. In turn, I know that artists and organizations will suffer because of these new guidelines.
I know too that even people at the NEA need to work, but shame on those who complied with this.
Given the current climate, I presume this to mean that if any fragile white person attending an NEA event feels that there is even a whiff of anti-settler, anti-colonization, pro-Asian, or pro-Black sentiment in the event, a grievance is encouraged (and may even lead to forfeit of the grant).
Furthermore, there is a requirement--I am not sure if this is new or not--that the grant holder must advise members of the public that if they feel they have been discriminated against during the event, they may file a complaint with the Director of Civil Rights at the NEA.
Grant holders must "maintain records and submit the records that are necessary to determine...compliance" and also maintain a record of compliance from any individual participating in the activity. (There goes my ability to participate in any NEA funding.)
National Endowment for the Arts announcement of new guidelines
Be sure to read through the "Assurance of Compliance" notes, which contain a requirement that anyone accepting an NEA grant must adhere to any and all Executive Orders. There is special mention that no grant holder may pursue any DEI initiative or anything that "promote[s] gender ideology."
I donāt even know where to begin on the unethical and cruel nature of Trumpās policies. But as we said during his first presidency, the cruelty is the point.
Asking politely now is definitely OK. As a former journal editor, Iāll say, however, that editors generally cannot hurry along the process.
Billionaire Elon Musk has stated that work is underway to shut down the U.S. foreign aid agency, USAID. Officials have been instructed not to report to work and have been locked out of the building.
This is š„. My only disagreement is with the suggestion that Trump supporters didnāt foresee this happening. They did.
We have a Constitutional crisis because his voters wanted a Constitutional crisis. We have to convince them that this will lead to destruction for all.

Making America Great Again!
I continue to hope for humanity as the darkness overtakes us :/
Congratulations! The book looks terrific!
The suggestion that DEI is somehow responsible for the American Airlines crash is cruel and callousābut itās also not going to play well. The politicisation of grief cannot happen this quicklyāit looks too much like scoring cheap political points, even to MAGA stalwarts (I suspect).
