The Brussels Effect has not reversed. But it is facing its first real test. Whether the EU's model can set global standards without American buy-in is now an open question.
The US has moved in the opposite direction. The Trump administration has labeled the DMA a non-tariff barrier, accused the EU of targeting American firms, and stepped back from antitrust enforcement against big tech entirely.
Brazil has proposed DMA-style rules, designating platforms with $9.5bn+ in global revenue as "relevant economic agents." Fines could reach 20% of Brazilian revenue. But the bill has no scheduled vote and faces strong US industry opposition.
Japan is live but narrow. Its Mobile Software Competition Act targets only Google and Apple on payment and operating system interoperability. Apple released iOS updates to comply in December 2025. It is a start, not a replica.
