Should've done this sooner.

1/ Last year, 32 people died while in federal detention, making it the deadliest year for the agency in more than two decades. Two weeks ago, Renee Good was killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis. Today, Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was killed by federal officers in the same city.

Pretti clearly did not brandish his gun. Which means the government is saying he was killed for legally exercising his right to carry.

It’s as clear-cut a violation of the Second Amendment as I can possibly imagine. And we’re about to see the bulk of the gun rights crowd defend his murder.

10/ And so, I stand with the families of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and Keith Porter Jr. I stand with the citizens of Minnesota. I stand with your tired, your poor, your huddled massing yearning to breathe free. And I stand with the Constitution. Sic semper tyrannis.

9/ Ensuring transparency, accountability, and constitutional compliance in civil immigration enforcement, does not obstruct federal authority; rather, it collectively fulfills our highest duty to uphold constitutional governance and protect civil liberties for all people.

Georgia Senate Democrats introduce bills to regulate federal immigration officials in state Democratic Georgia lawmakers announced four bills Tuesday introducing rules for how Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal agents could operate in Georgia.

7/ Senate Bills 389, 390, 391, and 397 establish clear boundaries on enforcement authority, reinforce constitutional restraints, and protect the public by ensuring that civil and military power remains subject to democratic oversight and the rule of law. www.wabe.org/georgia-sena...

6/ That's why I support efforts at the Georgia General Assembly to set clear limits on federal enforcement practices. Transparency. Identification. Civilian control. Judicial warrants. Accountability when rights are violated. These aren't radical ideas; they're foundational ones.

5/ Protest and assembly does not carry the death sentence. Violation of immigration rules does not carry the death sentence. Merely carrying a firearm does not carry the death sentence. If constitutional rights only exist for some people, then they are secure for no one.

4/ The Constitution binds all of us--federal, state, and local. But despite being foundational tenets of our republic, the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments are being trampled before us. And it turns out, the Second isn't even sacred to these people either.

3/ Federal badges do not come with constitutional exemptions. Nor does the Constitution yield to armed thugs in masks and shoddy tactical gear. It does not end at city limits or vanish at the jailhouse door. And it certainly does not disappear during enforcement operations.

2/ That is not “law and order.” That's an unaccountable system failing to serve and protect the people. The Constitution is still the law of the land. It applies in our streets, at our hospitals, in our homes, at schools, and across all our communities.

6/ Food is not optional.
Georgia must follow the example set by Mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta Public Schools, and our community leaders and ensure that no family goes hungry during this crisis.

5/ Tonight, the Atlanta City Council took an additional step adopted a resolution calling on Governor Brian Kemp to declare a State of Emergency and use state funds to continue SNAP benefits until federal operations resume.

4/ While the state has failed to act, local leaders are stepping up. Mayor @andreforatlanta.com and the City of Atlanta have mobilized food banks, nonprofits, and community partners to fill the gap and protect residents from hunger.

3/ With a $14.6 billion state surplus, Georgia has the resources to act. Without state intervention, thousands of families, seniors, and working parents will be left struggling to feed their loved ones.

2/ Despite this looming crisis, Governor Kemp has not taken emergency action to protect Georgia families. Other states like Virginia and Louisiana have declared states of emergency to keep food on the table. Georgia should do the same.

1/ The federal government shutdown is threatening food security for more than 1.4 million Georgians, including 640,000 children, who rely on SNAP benefits to eat. Those benefits could stop as soon as November 1.
