Mike and Chara Smith - Designing for the love of the game
Mike and Chara Smith - Designing for the love of the game YouTube video by Dive Club 🤿

I've been so eager to share this interview since the second we hung up.

The show is called Dive Club and boy did we dive deep. We covered a ton of ground and fired off more than a few hot takes. Chara had some great metaphors and I moved around a lot.

🤿 Dive Club | 14 UI Patterns for generative AI Types of UI that will be relevant moving forward — an article from Des Traynor / /

One of my favorite threads on Twitter right now comes from the co-founder of Intercom.

It's a list of new UI patterns that generative AI necessitates

It's so good that I asked him if I could turn it into an article to share outside of Twitter 👇

Something Sam Peitz said to me this week brought back a lot of these memories

“If you share the things you’re really passionate about, the right people will find you”

So ya... share the work you want to get hired for :)

Designing anatomy study tools for pre-med students ended up being the foot in the door I needed

And eventually that experience helped me land the role as the founding designer at Maven

That little set of three mockups changed everything for me :)

Months later someone found those designs on Dribble and I received an offer from a company called Bootcamp to lead design on a new product suite!

✅ Good news: I was working in education

😵‍💫 Bad news: Cadavers make me nauseous lol

As soon as I graduated college I knew I wanted to work in education

But 5+ years into my career I hadn't taken a single step

So one afternoon I mocked up some ideas for a homeschooling product

This ~2 hour design exercise ended up creating an inflection point in my career 👇

Software is about to get a LOT more personalized

And on the heels of AI is a new spatial medium! What does an AR art museum built entirely out of dynamic shaders look like?

I don’t know… but I’m excited to live in a world where the lines between art and product design begin to blur :)

What happens when anyone can spend a single afternoon creating an app that is designed specifically for their grandma?

Products like that can tap into a level of human expression that simply doesn’t exist in our scale-dictated world.

And this is only the beginning…

As code becomes cheaper and easier to write, an explosion of niche products is imminent.

Old-world economics have capped artistic expression in software

if you’re going to invest the time to build something then it better make money and have the potential to scale.

But that's about to change...
