Favorite TV show older than you?
Sorry man
Your 30s: decade of optional maintenance
Your 40s: decade of mandatory maintenance
50: things feel mostly OK but the warranty just expired
YOU ARE HERE
I really like this one. Had to audition like half a dozen from CVS before picking it. I think there’s an SPF30 version?
Opening that clip with the distant rumble of the Marseilles from the 1812 overture is really just 👌

1/2 the reason Lucent was known as the “flaming assholes”
Put a bunch of Lucent logos in the recycling bin & in the box I dropped off for eWaste
Some people live very small lives and never have sustained interactions with people with empathy, so they think the whole world is that way

Either that or bring back Aperture
So far this thread is the best part of my day
The robots tell me it’s “The Midas Plague” by Frederik Pohl
There is a sci-fi short story from my childhood I need to dig up, where robots created so much abundance that consumption was mandatory, and the rich were the ones who lived by modest means.
If you burn everything to the ground and everyone has to live in single story buildings then everyone lives on the top floor - y’know, the penthouse
Silly me. My IRL friends have left Philly, I have fewer opportunities to improve my Philly geography - at least in person.
I am very impressed that rats didn’t break 10% of top 6 responses
I am also a little puzzled at the lack of fish, given, y’know, Fishtown
And OLD. All the impacts of age are showing on all his faculties.
Coming from telecom I can tell you that having software and devices out of support is routine. Like “not sure if we have more supported or unsupported devices” routine.
I’m saying it’s not “a non-issue because both sides have the same tools/weapons”. I think AI will bring speed, persistence, and depth, and that for lightly supported (in particular old) software running on critical infrastructure it’ll give the bad guys an advantage. Not game over, an advantage.
Good things to be worried about. Today mine are:
Work displacement
Skill loss (no one learning what’s delegated to AI)
Accountability shifting (“AI’s fault”)
and for my view on that last one I’ll reference my pinned tweet

I don’t have Apple News or a WSJ sub but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that’s a “yes and” comment.
when our grandkids ask "how could you not see the Republic of Gilead approaching?" we'll have to explain how someone threatened to launch the Republic of Gilead every couple months and it was hard to tell which ones could actually pull it off
I’m curious what your top 3 AI worries are.
I think you’re underestimating the amount of unsupported and in particular closed source unsupported stuff in critical infrastructure.
Wall warts in every voltage from 1.4 to 28V
So. Many. FireWire. Cables.

Cleaning out some dark corners and hoo boy have I lived here a long time. AUI cables, SCSI CD-ROM drives - some of which require caddies - and way too many keyboards. Broken stuff cannibalizable for some other project. Unopened caulk hardened in the tube.
Extra space is a curse.
