That or their behavior is blamed on their past trauma. It's just nice after seeing nonstop shitty redemption/atonement arcs for the past few years to have a character actually WORK for their redemption rather than have it given to them because they did one noble act of kindness or said sorry.

There's also a massive issue with stories thinking "accountability" is the villain/antagonist suffering mentally/physically from external factors unrelated to the pain they inflicted or expressing constant guilt without actually properly atoning for their behaviors.

The victim's feelings are so often disregarded or are forced to be portrayed as extremely forgiving and saintly (despite never having these characteristics in the past), for the sake of making a villain/antagonist look like they were reformed. I am so tired of this "keep the peace with abusers" shit

I feel like my biggest frustration with so many redemption arcs is that you can tell writers are so attached to these characters that they don't feel comfortable letting them face any proper consequences for their actions and a lack of proper empathy for the vicims.

That last point is exactly why I think Caine’s crashout resonated the way it did, especially after I gave the episode time to stew.

Being the “weird” kid and not knowing what that meant or why, I definitely had tantrums where I lashed out, hurt people, b/c I didn’t know how to handle frustration.
