Surely it’s time…

‘An involuntary psychiatric hold (often known as an emergency hold, 72-hour hold, or temporary detention) can generally be initiated by police officers, licensed physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals…’

“I will NOT sacrifice the Oxford comma. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They assimilate the em dash and we fall back. They capture ‘not just X but y’ and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!”

The final part of the trilogy by Matthew De Abaitua @mdeabaitua.bsky.social is going straight into my thesis. I love getting to read such cool stuff. What vicious imaginary future, and what a finale!

On a very busy and loud train, listening to a man being interviewed for a job. He handled it well, so the carriage gave him a round of applause once he’d finished… fingers crossed he gets onto round two…

You can have it fast and cheap or good and fast but you can’t have all three.

Finally someone else says it! If your job is any corporate writing/reporting, most of the time is spent Gathering the Information. Actually writing it up takes a fraction of that. Bosses who don’t write for a living have always demanded you do it faster. They expect an LLM to fact-gather. It can’t.

FWIW absolutely no one I know who has expertise in spaceflight or planetary exploration thinks this is either remotely plausible or a good idea to attempt on such a timeline. The dominant reaction is somewhere on the spectrum between mockery and dismay. Real, important science was cancelled for this

Spain, tackling big tech. Every nation on the planet should be taking notes and implementing the identical combat strategies. Improve them, even.

We have to do something.
Tech shoved down our throats and harm caused by it, must be met head on, @mark-carney.bsky.social

Why would we not take action?

Iran latest: Trump ‘not happy with UK’ after Starmer resists demands Iran latest news today: live updates and latest developments from the Middle East

I would be prepared to accept fuel rationing, tinned veg and even electricity rationing if it means we don’t have to take part in another Gulf war. The bombing is not effecting regime change and frankly, we should be doing more to assist Ukraine rather than the US.

Does AI already have human-level intelligence? The evidence is clear
The vision of human-level machine intelligence laid out by Alan Turing in the 1950s is now a reality. Eyes unclouded by dread or hype will help us to prepare for what comes next.

Nature published another pile of trash

i am trying to catch up on some of my reading but this one is getting under my skin so here’s a thread highlighting why this piece is either ill-informed or intentionally ignorant of a wealth of knowledge from embodied cog sci and related fields
