“This study shows that household dust can be an important PFAS exposure route,” says Dr. Kotlarz. Children are especially vulnerable.
PFAS exposure is linked to cancer, heart disease, and reproductive issues. Until now, dust wasn’t widely recognized as a significant source.
PFAS levels were highest in homes closest to the Chemours Fayetteville Works plant, suggesting that air emissions from the facility are a major source.
The study, led by Dr. Nadine Kotlarz, analyzed dust from 65 homes in Bladen & Cumberland counties. PFAS were in 100% of homes, GenX in 89%.
NEW: NC State researchers found PFAS, “forever chemicals” in every dust sample from homes near the Chemours plant in NC.
