What 7th graders are feeling.

A pear soft as sepia
dangles dripping
from the dark tree limb.

How did the fruit
steal the moon
and hold its shadow hostage?

Biting into its pulp,
liquid erupts on lips—
then nothing

An empty soul.

Can you add me.

Suicide seemed inevitable when
I sprung back to life,
often I’d got things wrong,
now I can set them right.

I will not submit any forms.

I have witnessed my students—
beautiful brown-skinned people—
come to school every day,
wanting to learn and to eat healthy food,
cursing the inequity and the unjust.

I will not submit to injustice.
I will teach, and I will love.

And I will always love my wife
