Last night, ICE agents ambushed and detained Rumeysa Ozturk, a Fulbright scholar at Tufts University, outside her Somerville home. Ozturk’s abduction comes after she was targeted and doxxed by the extremist group Canary Mission over her activism for Palestinian rights and freedom. Neighbors report that unmarked vehicles had stalked her for two days before the arrest.
Ozturk is just one of 370 people ICE has arrested in Massachusetts in just the last week. In recent weeks, many of our leaders have said they would defend us against the Trump administration’s threats to “bring hell” to Boston. Today, we demand the immediate release of Ozturk, and for all our elected officials to match their words with action.
Now is the time to stand up and protect our communities. While Trump and the Heritage Foundation claim they are targeting students in the name of making Jews less safe, we know that threats, violence, and deportation do not make Jews safer and instead put us all in greater danger.
We will make our demands heard until all of us are safe; until all of us are free. Find your courage, stand with your community, and do not back down in the face of authoritarianism.
