I love this book so much! I think it's a great pair with--or, better put, contrast to--Arlie Hocschild's _The Managed Heart_, as an account of svc workers' affective experiences. I particularly love the way she uses Fanon.
This is an incredible story
A nice little interview about my book...

Last week, a 20 year-old man threw a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's mansion; two days later, people fired a gun at it. Earlier that week, someone fired gunshots into an city councilman's house who approved a data center.
Why the AI backlash has turned violent:
AI is profoundly unpopular. A recent NBC News poll found that among 18-34 year-olds, AI's net favorability rating is -44. *Negative 44*. Those are basically serial killer numbers. It's not much better among women 18-49. (Men over 50 and upper class are the only ones who like AI, and just barely.)
This new bullshit of getting 4-5 emails PER DAY trying to scam you with a "marketing" or "outreach" opportunity for your newly published book is so f'ing annoying, especially b/c the emails are just terrible AI summaries based on your own bookcopy which is alienating and also just, like, a bummer.
the left hates AI so much because its offenses cut across the new left / old left, artistic / social critique divides. it alienates human capacities, homogenizes culture, encourages inauthenticity, devastates the environment, promotes centralization, lessens worker power, increases unemployment.
If a DoorDash grandma tshirt doesn’t make you feel nauseous about late stage capitalism idk what will
It’s telling to me that UMass is aggressively enforcing this on faculty re course materials even as it does nothing to address the numerous ableist/unhealthy infrastructure issues on campus dailycollegian.com/2023/03/umas...
When a real disability studies/accessibility expert presented concerns abt Yuja to the Office of U/G Education, they asked her to submit a list of all the issues she flagged even as they acknowledged they had already signed a 3 yr contract w/o bothering to consult experts like her!
On my campus, this is all happening via the intervention of YujaPanorama, which by its own admission is not strictly based on the legally mandated standards and which is not even fully accessible itself! >
For those hereabouts scrambling to remediate course materials in order to meet the end of the month deadline for compliance with new federal ADA Title II standards, here is the endgame as I see it: 🧵
This is SO telling--as I often note to my students, if you ask genAI to assess/evaluate something without directly *asking* for critique, it will ALWAYS fail to be negative/critical.
it's officially out! :)

I wanted to take a moment to let folks know that Ted Martin's extraordinary book _American Literature's War on Crime_ is out! The book surveys almost 100 novels to explore how the War on Crime was waged on the page & how fiction made the policies & ideologies of crime control legible. It's amazing!
Also there's a discount code, CUP20, if folks want to order a copy!

My daughter's Halloween costume last year was "Zombie Olivia Rodrigo"; sounds like they'd be pals! :)
Donated! Prof. Willoughby-Herard followed her duty and put herself on the line to protect students protesting genocide. The UC and the state see her as a threat and want to make an example out of her. She needs our solidarity and help.
