None of this requires building anything.
These are habits of framing — how you ask, how you supply information, how you diagnose when results aren't right.
That shift, from user to informed user, is where the real leverage is.
Step 7: Hold the map metaphor.
Meaning as location. Similar concepts as neighbours. Search as finding nearby points.
You don't need the mathematics. You need the image. And that image will serve you every time you use an AI tool that involves finding or retrieving information.
Step 6: When evaluating AI search tools, look under the hood.
Semantic search (embeddings) understands natural language and varied phrasing, while keyword search doesn’t. The right choice depends on how users actually search.
Step 5: If an AI tool seems to ignore a document you've included — restructure, don't rephrase.
Move key instructions to the top. Move the document immediately after. Restate the specific question at the end.
Position in the context window affects attention. Structure accordingly.
Step 4: When a model gives you a confident answer that seems wrong — ask where it's getting that from.
Prompt it: "Are you drawing on your training data or on something I've provided?" The answer shapes whether you verify, correct, or supply better context.
Step 3: For anything time-sensitive or domain-specific — don't ask the model to retrieve from memory.
Give it the information directly. Paste in the document, the data, the current policy.
Ask it to reason over what you've supplied. That's where reliability lives.
Step 2: Know whether you're asking for baked-in knowledge or reasoning over something you've supplied.
These are different tasks. The model handles them differently. And when things go wrong, the diagnosis depends on knowing which you were asking for.
Step 1: When using AI search tools, trust meaning over exact phrasing.
You don't need to find the "right" keywords. Describe what you're looking for in your own words.
Embedding-based search is built to find what you mean — not match what you typed.
You don't need to build embedding systems to benefit from understanding them.
But a few practical habits — shaped by what we cover in Part 3 — will immediately improve the results you get from AI tools.

You don't need to implement embeddings yourself to benefit from understanding them.
Knowing they exist helps you choose the right tools, ask the right questions when something breaks, and set realistic expectations for what AI can and can't do reliably.
What these three cases share: the model behaved consistently with how it works.
The misalignment was between expectations and mechanics.
Once the team understood embeddings, parametric vs contextual knowledge, and context window attention — the diagnosis became straightforward.
The document was there. But it was buried deep in a long prompt, in the middle of the context window — where model attention is weakest.
Restructuring the prompt — task instruction first, document second, question restated at the end — produced a completely different result.
Use case 3: The document that gets ignored.
A team pastes a long policy document into their prompt and asks a specific question. The model answers from its general knowledge — ignoring the document.
This is a context structure issue, not a knowledge gap.
The fix: supply the current information in context.
Paste in the updated regulation. Ask the model to reason from that, not from its training.
Shift the task from "retrieve from memory" to "reason over what I've given you." Different mechanism. Much more reliable.
Use case 2: The confidently wrong answer.
A team asks their AI tool about a regulatory change that happened six months ago. The model answers confidently — with the old rule.
This is parametric knowledge failure. The model's training predates the change. It doesn't know what it doesn't know.
The fix: switch to embedding-based retrieval.
Convert all documents to embeddings at index time. Convert each query to an embedding at search time. Return the most semantically similar chunks.
Same documents. Questions phrased naturally. Results that actually surface.
