I felt that Emma was something of an unreliable ‘narrator’ at times (i.e. the flashes to what could be imagined versions of conversations), which did make it hard to wholeheartedly trust her expressions of remorse

That’s very interesting. I thought their actions were all foolish, but isn’t planning a school shooting indicative of some truly evil intent, regardless of how ephemeral it is?
