Patchwork of silks and cottons of a variety of colours. Girl's frock of mulicoloured patchwork in silks (including patachute silk) and cottons, the dress has a squared neckline with an organdie frill, and padded puffed sleeves are lined, and the gathered skirt had a built-in organdie petticoat with a hem frill. The dress fastens at the back with five pearlised buttons and stitched buttonholes.

Description from The Met’s site - “Inspired by the modernity of London’s subway system, popularly known as the Tube, Power featured it in many of his signature linocuts. The disengaged passengers on this crowded subway—a scene familiar to many urban dwellers—prefer to read their newspapers rather than interact with one another. Alienation, a by-product of modern life, is a theme often present in Power’s images of the London Underground”.

The chair has an ecclesiastical feel, fumed oak and dome shaped with inlaid that includes winged cherubs, a lily and a rose motifs all suggest a memorial one might see depicted in a stain-glass or even a head stone. The high backed proportions of the chair allow the inlay work to be visible even when the child is sitting within it. The back of the chair is decorated with a design in inlay work that gives the date of the chair as 1901, hidden within a monogram.
This chair (built 1901) was commissioned by Joseph Angus for his daughter Joan. She was born in 1896, the youngest of ten children in the Angus family. She died of tuberculosis aged 12.

The same cats, now both plump, sit companionably arm in arm on top of a wall. Text reads: BROWN CAT'S THANKS. "Thanks for your feed of Nestle's milk. It did me good- my coat's like silk: And now I'm sound in limb and brain. I'll never drink skim milk again!"

Crowds have gathered in the Place de la Bastille to experience a rare solar eclipse. But rather than recording the astronomical phenomenon itself, Atget has turned his lens on its awestruck spectators, who gaze upwards at the thrilling power of nature.
