Why does this matter?
Most dementia research focuses on Alzheimer’s pathology, but vascular disease independently contributes to cognitive impairment. This work highlights the heterogeneity of dementia-related pathologies and the importance of vascular health in dementia prevention.
Key Findings:
1) Arteriolosclerosis (small vessel disease) is associated with worse memory, executive function, and language performance in decedents without severe dementia.
2)These effects persist even after adjusting for Alzheimer’s pathology (Aβ/tau) and Lewy body disease.
