Have 2 HVAC certified members in the family. Over the years we've had, or serviced, all of the different brands. We have a Goodman unit now mainly because they've been dependable and parts were readily available.
Sounds more like a compressor problem, but could be something minor like dirty coils or low on gas.
Good thing you have some type of backup.
We installed a mini split for that reason plus in case of power outage we can run it with a portable generator.
Is it not running at all or blowing warm air? If blowing warm air, first thing to check is the filter to see if it's clogged.
