Y'all the latest episode of the #Kilauea #eruption just went CRAZY. It looks like pressure built up enough to explode out the ground around the two existing vents (first few seconds), leading to a massive surge in lava fountaining.๐๐คฏ

Our paper on Taftan Volcano went global! ๐บ๐ฐ
Couldnโt ask for a better academic & science farewell. ๐๐!
Doi: doi.org/10.1029/2025...
๐กโ
Hence, we propose two internal mechanisms:
1๏ธโฃ Hydrothermal alteration โ lower permeability โ trapped gas โ pressure buildup โ uplift โ degassing
2๏ธโฃ Small deep magma input โ volatile release โ shallow pore-pressure increase.
โฐ๏ธBoth imply Taftan is more active than previously thought
๐ค What caused it?
We tested whether the unrest was triggered by external factors or by internal processes within the volcano.
๐ง๏ธโ๏ธ Rainfall and seismic data showed no correlation โ no significant rain or nearby Mโฅ5 earthquakes during the event
So, we suggested that the uplift was trigger-less.
๐
Results shows that Uplift started mid-July 2023 (ยฑ4 days) and ended mid-May 2024 (ยฑ9 days).
East flank deformation began later but ceased earlier; summit uplift lasted about 10 months and coincided with several gas-emission events. ๐
๐ To determine the precise timing of the unrest, including its start and end times, we utilized a hyperbolic tangent model applied to a refined set of time series pixels from the summit and both flanks. The findings indicate a gradual onset, acceleration, and recovery in deformation behaviour.
Introduce ๐ซ๏ธ Common-Mode Filtering (CMF) to mitigate spatially correlated atmospheric signals by averaging time series of non-deformed pixels and subtracting them from the target point. Results show an improvement in time series accuracy of up to 50%, aiding in the precise analysis of unrest timing.
๐กSentinel-1 InSAR reveals ~9 cm of vertical uplift centered on the active fumarole fields.
Modeling with a Mogi source indicates a shallow pressure source at 0.5โ0.6 km depth, right beneath the summit
๐บ๏ธ This Fig. shows location of Taftan in the Makran subduction arc.
Taftan is the only one with persistent fumarolic activity.
๐จ New paper Alert! ๐๐ฐ๏ธ
We report the first signs of unrest at #Taftan Volcano (Makran Arc). Using InSAR and Common-Mode Filtering method, we detected a spontaneous 10-month summit upliftโwithout any external triggerโsuggesting possible internal magmatic processes.

Olympus Mons, the biggest volcano in the Solar System
Olympus Mons is a shield volcano located on Mars. With of over 21 kilometres high and a base of 600 kilometres, it is the biggest volcano in the Solar System.
The first day also included a talk from special guest @pablojglez.bsky.social from @csic.es. Pablo spoke about the activity, past and present, of Teide volcano in Tenerife ๐๐ช๐ธ
Early today our PhD researcher @michelleymw.bsky.social passed her viva with distintions!!!
She worked very hard and we are proud of her journey towards scientific independence.
All the best for your new goals

The left side of this diapir has been altered by an active salt mine, reshaping its natural form. Letโs protect these geological wonders for future generations!
Open to collaborating on salt structure researchโmonitoring, modeling, and field trips (in Iran). Letโs explore together! ๐
Unveiling nature's masterpiece!๐ This small salt diapir in central Iran, its shape mimicking a brain๐ง , is Earthโs own neural network rising from the sands๐. Its activity was revealed for the first time using InSAR 2019๐ฐ๏ธ. Learn more! ๐

Profiles of displacement rate in the vertical directions (red color) versus topography. The red curves and left y-axis correspond to the vertical displacement rate, and the black curves and the right y-axes correspond to altitude.
This incredible salt structure, with its fascinating shape, is activeโcan you imagine? Yes, it is! Located in central Iran, itโs part of some of the most unique and amazing salt diapirs in the world. In 2021, we were the first to reveal its activation using InSAR
Salt diapirs never fail to amaze me!

๐ (5) We validated our offset tracking results with hashtag#GNSS data inside the caldera, demonstrating how these methods complement each other in monitoring large-scale volcanic deformation.
๐ (4) By comparing ascending and descending satellite tracks just one day apart, we quantified the underground magma migration rate.
๐ (3) Our focus extends to the volcanoโs flank, where magma flowed for nearly two months through a sub-horizontal dike, revealing how the magma reservoir supplied this dike to sustain ongoing lava flows.
๐ก Key highlights:
๐ (1) We employed hashtag#InSAR, optical flow, and pixel offset tracking to unveil how surface deformation traces magma dynamics.
๐ (2) We captured the full eruption cycleโpre-, co-, and post-eruptionโby processing consecutive hashtag#Sentinel-1 SAR imagery.
๐ Paper Alert! ๐ฐ๏ธ
Excited to share our new paper on the 2018 Sierra Negra #volcano eruption! We used #InSAR, #optical-flow, & #pixel-offset-tracking to understand how surface deformation reveals the volcanoโs magma dynamics. Check out the highlights below!
