The Tanzer book being referenced is Creatures of Want and Ruin, Third in her Diabolist's Library series. You can read them stand-alone, but they're all worth your time...

honestly disco elysium kind of nailed what it’s like to think sometimes. Like there’s something wrong with that man but sometimes u gotta debate with the myriad facets of ur personality and impulses before failing the skill check and absolutely eating shit

Any number of video games from the 90s/00s. JRPGs and Myst-style puzzle games, mostly.

The first thing I ever really tried to write was a sequel to Chrono Trigger that was a Back to the Future Part II revisit of the first game, from the first game's children's perspective. (Yes even Frog and Robo)

We made a machine that can only run. Can't use a tool, clean a carpet, carry a load. Only run. Doesn't need to eat, can't get tired, doesn't need to conserve energy for the rest of its day. Only run.

And it's still only six minutes faster than a person who can smile at a cloud or help a friend.

A) Whenever I am presented with "content" to "consume" I Bartleby the Scrivener right the hell out of there.

B) I bounce off the writing of living humans' earnest attempts to make art. Friends, even. If my only options are AI slop "content" and a brick wall, I--once again--go the way of Bartleby.

B. Pladek's "Tell Them a Story to Teach Them Kindness." They'd need to read a few classic pieces of fiction in order to "get it," (ha ha) it communicates so much of the fear/disgust/despair that we in the humanities feel, and it's so bravely vulnerable.

Yeah, RAtM stabbed a cringe-dagger so deep into the soundtrack that the whole movie collapsed in on itself into a oubliette singularity.

*hears some sick Tom Morello guitar licks*

Wait, what were we talking about?

You just have to introduce their natural predators to the ecosystem: high school sophomores writing research papers.

My first two answers are just outside the 2000s:

Biggie's "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems" and "Everythang" from Street Sweeper Social Club.

I've seen this particular site as a teacher, and it is entirely aimed at students who a) did not write their essay, and b) know that their teacher is going to run it through an AI checker.

It's the "Are we the baddies" of AI detection. If you're asking, you already know.

I am going to learn how to gritty just so I can do an out-of-date dance on the piss-soaked grave of "AI."

All I'm saying is, Max Gladstone was really cooking when he went, "these finance/tech people are really just liches, right?"

My guess this guy spent a half-hour half-listening to one (1) neuroscience lecture about the discontinuity of identity and decided it justified his inability to withstand the briefest inward glance at the joyless, compassionless, pointless, vacuous cavern he finds there.

For...yeesh, about a decade now? I've been reading a webcomic built around the premise of "what if the goblins picked up the loot in their village and went out to be adventurers themselves?"
