I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

In a Flemish folktale a will-o'-the-wisp often hovered over the place where a treasure was buried. The light was thought to be the soul of the person to whom this treasure belonged. The soul still guarded the treasure and had broken the neck of the people who had tried to steal it.
