'Hard to break the habit': Why free public transport isn't enough to shift from cars Free public transport is a popular policy, but researchers say it's not enough to convince drivers to leave the car at home.

From Australia:

"New research has found public transport fares have not been a decisive factor in pushing people to shift from car to public transport."

"Better public transport access, coverage, reliability, and travel time have a greater impact than price in changing long-term commuting habits."

FREEDOM TO NOT DRIVE

A reminder that this is a two way cycleway. Parking in the bike lane pushes folks into oncoming traffic or onto sidewalks...

Believe it or not, these 3 folks in the video are heading to work too (at least one of us is)!

I double checked - SEPTA does not have a route 420. I did just discover that apparently the 410 was discontinued some time ago!

This reminds me that I need to go to Sporting events. All of our stadiums in the city, besides PPG until late 2027, are accessible by bike lanes/trails. Plus I'm so close these days (I can bike/walk!), even though I'm not personally a huge sports fan lol

It certainly would be much nicer if folks didn't need to bring their cars with them, requiring these massive Avenues and parking lots

I love seeing folks walking to and from the games. It minimizes the horrendous traffic gridlock

Happy crowded trains generally arent bad. I remember crowding into absolutely packed BSL trains when the Eagles won their first Superbowl and everyone was in great spirits despite the crowding!

Oh, to me this means it's a car free bike/pedestrian boulevard to me, provided they don't construct stages, barriers and park vehicles blocking the entire bridge entrance to the bridge...again.

They love the bike lanes and the trails, unfortunately. It's a bit more annoying with the NFL Draft fencing everywhere as well

We have deserts in the US, and we probably should consider building something similar with all of these data centers being built here, requiring tons of additional electricity

I agree, and your idea does make sense. PRT does the same thing in Wilkinsburg, where the buses avoid Penn Avenue and just use side streets instead for faster service

Way back in the day when the East Busway was new, Port Authority installed signs along the road (at least on Negley Ave) that directs people to the local Busway station.

A couple of signs still exist today

Pedestrian Wayfinding System - Downtown Pittsburgh About the Wayfinding Project Launched in 2014 with the support of philanthropic, governmental, non-profit,

One awesome things they did in Pittsburgh is important a new pedestrian wayfinding system in Downtown Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. There are directions to the Light Rail, but nothing for a local bus line

So the local bus avoids Western Avenue, the main street of Allegheny West, due to traffic congestion. However, there are bars, restaurants and people that don't see the bus because it goes on the back roads for reliability.

What is a good way to point people on the main road to nearby bus service?
