"These types of vessels are the most concerning if they go along the northern sea route, because even if they come across light ice or some floating ice formations, it can be dangerous.”"

Ksenia Vakhrusheva, the Bellona Foundation’s Arctic project manager, says: “They are usually tankers meant for scrap, but the previous owners didn’t want to pay for scrapping so they just sold the ships elsewhere. "

“[The shadow fleet] adds a huge unknown – where are these ships, where are they travelling to, what cargoes are they carrying? It escalates the risk,” says @sianprior.bsky.social Prior, lead adviser to the @cleanarctic.bsky.social

Arctic sea ice hits lowest winter level as unprecedented heat hits smashes records all over Earth Arctic sea ice has shrunk to a tie for its lowest winter peak on record. Winter is when ice grows, but not as much as normal this year.

Vital Arctic sea ice shrank to tie its lowest measured level for the winter, the season when ice grows, as a warming Earth shattered records across the continents. @apnews.com @borenbears.bsky.social

Good story!
The emissions, specifically black carbon, are destroying the arctics for everyone, human and wildlife. No doubt in our minds cruise ships should be prohibited.
End of story!

Alaska needs to be realistic. AKLNG is far from being the great salvation of the State. There are risks they outweigh the benefits. We need to talk about that.

The current discount plan that will be offered to cruise lines rewards them for using LNG. Arguably a worse fuel than HFO.

Over 80 organizations endorsed a letter to banks and pension funds calling on them not to fund Tilbury LNG expansion.

Whales are threatened by every tanker, and LNG terminals cause pollution on the land through leaks and flaring.

“Black carbon is one of longest, unresolved issues running at @imohq.bsky.social & must be dealt with without delay. A strong agreement on polar fuels can set rules which will reduce black carbon emission levels from shipping in Arctic region. We can not wait another year before taking next steps”.

“In addition to ECAs it is essential @imohq.bsky.social regulate ship emissions of black carbon impacting Arctic. Since BCpollution is transported in atmosphere, a regulation must apply in whole Arctic, not just waters where sea or glacier ice can be expected” @sianprior.bsky.social

“However there is already overwhelming evidence – so there is no reason to not regulate scrubber pollution. The Clean Arctic Alliance is calling on ambitious member states to keep pushing for discharge bans, either in territorial seas, PSSAs and or Emission Control Areas”.

“’Due to the IMO’s failure to regulate harmful discharges from ships equipped with scrubbers, there is an increase in local, national, & regional authorities introducing bans on scrubber water discharges”, said Dr. Kåre Press-Kristensen from Green Global Future, a member of the Clean Arctic Alliance

“Scrubbers at present justify the continued use of heavy fuel oil (HFO), the dirtiest of all fuels. The shipping industry should get their act together by rapidly moving away from HFO and from fossil fuels in the longer term.”

Thanks to Clean Arctic Alliance for this great infographic, showing how ships with scrubbers pollute and acidify the oceans, harming the entire marine food web.

“We need to regulate emissions and black carbon, in particular. Both are completely unregulated in the Arctic.”
