In this photo, Prince isn’t looking up at the buildings, just down at the steps right in front of him. He had become, by that time, the greatest, most complete pop star ever. And during that rehearsal, there was a guitar solo he never practiced — “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. youtu.be/dWRCooFKk3ct

Less than 30 years later, he was walking down 52nd Street, and Afshin told me that barely anyone recognized him. (Or, if they did, they didn’t believe it was Prince until he’d already passed.) Where was he headed? Towards rehearsals for his induction, later that night, in the Rock & Roll Hall Fame.

(This photo is from another stop on that tour, but it gives you the vibe.) At one point, he asked where everyone was from. Then he told us he’d first visited New York while staying with his sister who lived in Rahway, NJ. He said sort of wistfully, “That’s as close as I ever got to the city.”
