One of my most memorable Christmases was serving the National Guard at the border. So today as we enjoy all the goodness around us, take a moment and think about those who aren’t with their families.

Even though during World War II African Americans weren’t allowed to be Rosies, she was widely considered a Rosie in more recent years. Betty wowed me at one of my annual senior conferences and during a visit to the museum with a busload of high school girls.

Betty Reid Soskin lived a long and consequential life. The country’s oldest serving National Park Service ranger passed away yesterday, on the Winter Solstice, at age 104. Betty had worked at the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Park Museum in Richmond for more than a decade.
