Professor Subodh Dave has been elected as the next President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
According to the Women's Health Strategy, any funding withheld due to poor experiences under new patient power payments would be used for targeted improvements to the same service. So not really withheld at all. That seems less powerful than the rhetoric suggested.
Eeek. 16 years covering health... thanks to all the patients, whistleblowers, contacts and people who've trusted me with their stories. Plenty more to do.
"By moving money away from delivering care that generates health gains more cheaply to drugs that generate health gains at greater expense, the NHS could end up less able to improve overall health from the same budget" - @healthfoundation.bsky.social

The government will increase the amount of compensation to victims of the infected blood scandal. As of 7 April, 3,273 people have received an offer and more than ÂŁ2 billion has been paid out.
The Dept of Health does not centrally record the number of its employees who are on performance management plans. That seems unbelievable.
I have barely noticed it in Southampton, don’t seem to be any knock on effects in terms of consultant lists cancelled in my department
We're more concerned about the rota gaps next week. At least during strike week we are allowed to allocate the resource required.
No effect in clinical areas. Most of the BMA affiliated International Medical Graduates haven’t taken part in strikes, disenchanted by BMA’s anti-IMG rhetoric and stance.
So how is the strike going in your hospital as we approach the weekend? DM if you'd prefer to share things anonymously.
The NHS is using thousands of “locally employed doctors” on short-term contracts to keep services running. In Novintan’s hospital, two thirds of doctors on the rota are in non-training posts. “There’s a real need for all of those jobs,” she said.

"We previously had decent progression, and we didn’t have a jobs crisis, and doctors were valued as they were back in 2008. That is not some fantasy standard that has never existed" - BMA RDC chair Jack Fletcher www.thetimes.com/article/0a68...
A really good read and useful as captures one of the ways the system has changed to lead to the anger amongst resident doctors
Pay may be the main demand but it's also acting to compensate for multiple issues in resident doctor training that many trainees feel won't be fixed
A good explainer on a system that's much weirder than anyone can imagine. Calls out for a govt to reform the system, not tinker.
Yes I did put that to the BMA rep. He replied to say the taxpayer is investing thousands in training them up so its a poor return on investment if we dont allow them to progress.
This is a great piece explaining a standoff that often looks incomprehensible from the outside.
Another doctors strike looms next week - I took a look at one of the central issues making doctors angry, thousands can't get training jobs.
But with each pay rise they become more expensive for the NHS to train while patients wait for treatment:

First case of Avian influenza reported in Europe. A patient in Italy hospitalised after being exposed outside Europe.
Sadly she died at the end of November after a pretty horrific year but she died well and in control of things and nothing was left unsaid between us.
Newly diagnosed with #MND I asked mum what she wanted to do. She said she really wanted to see where I worked. So a year ago today she was treated like a VIP at The Sunday Times and then we had 2 days in London seeing the sights. Laughing and talking. So glad we did that.
Sir Brian Langstaff has closed the infected blood inquiry today. His letter to ministers includes a really fascinating appendix commentary on his view on public inquiries going forward: www.infectedbloodinquiry.org.uk/sites/defaul...

At the end of 2023, 2 children from London visited relatives in Birmingham. Six months later, the city was the site of the largest outbreak of measles since the 1990s, more than 400 cases. A total of 145 children were admitted to hospital, with another 137 treated in A&E.
🚨 EXC - England is facing its second outbreak of measles in as many months after the virus resurfaced in Birmingham, where 2 years ago more than 400 were infected www.thetimes.com/article/4b86...

"The government’s tolerance for costly and disruptive action that undermines a critical public service is fast diminishing" says @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social as he outlines the deal
@bma.org.uk have rejected: www.gov.uk/government/s...
Resident doctors in the NHS to launch a six-day strike straight after the Easter bank holiday starting at 7am on April 7 until 6.59am on April 13.
Streeting says East Kent hospital had a duty to report the first suspected meningitis case within 24 hours. They did so in 26 hours he says, adding that wasn't good enough and he is asking for an account of why that happened.
