In February, I hung out with America’s Internet princeling, Jaboukie Young-White, and wrote about what his new hour of standup means to his career, and what his career means to comedy in 2026.

"Take this as a call to arms. You have an opportunity to become a general in the struggle to preserve a culture."

You may not know Andy Weir’s name yet but the author of Project Hail Mary has established himself as the new Michael Crichton. He made a list of the sci-fi books and movies that influenced him as a young writer and we discussed.

For most of my childhood my mom was a researcher at Entertainment Weekly and worked in their massive library of other magazines reporters were constantly referencing. We lose so much when reporters, or anyone else, can't access that history.
Means a lot coming from you Jerry!
This was a great read. As a Mind Squad alum who fought with publishers to digitize mag content, thank you for this.
great piece. the erosion of search has made finding old music journalism even more frustrating
I use proquest through a friend's NYPL card to access a lot of mag and newspaper archives, but pdfs aren't as easy to share as links (and what if my friend moves?!?)

outstanding and important piece
I still have all the magazines I collected from my teen years through early adulthood. They've survived several moves (one cross country). They sit in a crate in my garage. One day I'll finally give them the ol' cellophane treatment. They're legit relics now and should be treated respectfully.
Really good deep dive on the terrible state of hip-hop media archives and what that means for culture writing today
I wrote about old rap magazines, the fight for the future of hip hop’s past, and the impact the digital age has had on history, for @defector.com

For March, the column travels both to Myrtle Ave and the El Paso/Juarez border to discuss the best tortillas in America, self-funding a hit restaurant, and how New Yorkers feel about ICE with the great Chef Alan Delgado.

This weekend at BAM, Criterion curatorial director Ashley Clark has programmed a series with selections from his new essential new book, The World of Black Film. I got on the phone with Ash to discuss his life’s work, Spike Lee, and more.

Casino turned 30 over the weekend. I wrote about the maximalist brilliance many critics missed in 1995 and why they missed it, as well as its place in Scorsese’s filmography three decades later.

A beautiful requiem for the miracle that was D'Angelo.
The pen, the voice, the face, the talent.
The three classics.
The genius that he could summon by force of will.
The impossibility of categorizing him.
The void that his death leaves.

Dug this heartfelt tribute to D'Angelo by @abebeame.bsky.social. "With each project that parallel line between the sound of mainstream R&B & whatever TF D’Angelo is up to continued to diverge...but the songs were no less potent or beloved." HT @nitishpahwa.com | www.passionweiss.com/2025/10/14/d...
few people beat @abebeame.bsky.social when it comes to passionate, deeply felt obits of our greatest artists
so, @abebeame.bsky.social finagled his way into the NYFF's Marty Supreme events, then penned a dispatch for the ages
Wrote about a beloved, once thriving industry in decline and why you’re all responsible for it.

This is a good deep dive on Meek. Being Philly all the way down to my bones means he reps the city and vice versa but it's known that his limitless talent is matched only by the fucking mess of a life he has outside the studio.
Also he lost a rap beef to Drake, but mainly it's the other things.
Profiled Meek Mill and discussed criminal justice reform, label bullshit, and you know who.
