If it helps my chances, my friend has a tortilla press we've used for some of the batches. But that's a great tip—thank you!

I'm trying to make flour tortillas good enough (and pliable enough) to replace the store-bought ones we use for burritos and quesadillas. If I can master this recipe, it will save us quite a bit over the long term. Plus they're fun to cook, even when they don't come out great.

Two recent failed bakes: Banana bread and tortillas.

The banana bread came out great, I just did a comically bad job getting it out of the pan.

The tortillas... well, this is mine and my friend Michelle's 7th batch and none of them have been great. Do I know anyone with some tortilla tips?

Lol—I have not. For some reason "all goo" is not the most appetizing phrase... But I'll try them nonetheless!

People are finding beauty in previously unfound places: in errors, typos, things that are anything but the average of expressions that AI forces down our throats.

I encourage everyone to find these things in their lives and hobbies that prove undoubtedly that humanity speaks.

This is the one effect of GenAI I like—I truly feel like I appreciate a wider range of art now, and I delight in finding what appear to be mistakes. Mistakes can reveal a creator's intentions, or they can just be little details that make you think about the person who worked to express themselves.

It's brilliant. More on it in this thread:

(I did not bake them in a microwave—I hid them here to cool because I have two cats who will eat any object left unattended)

Rather than searching craft stores for wooden pieces, I opted for polymer clay, which I baked in my oven. Took less than two hours to sculpt and bake these, and I think they came out great. Might do this for custom pieces again sometime.

A piece of paper with a 5x5 grid containing several clay blocks, cylinders, and other shapes. Painted wooden "road" pieces lay between some squares, and a hand-drawn image of a fish on a cylinder sits near the edge of the board. All of this rests on a wooden table.

I recently had a chance to play @ianzang.bsky.social's Roads With No Name for the third time, and it's still great. This was my first experience GMing a game, and though I have a lot to learn we had a wonderful time. Can't wait to play this again!

Attendance feels like around 200 people. The organizers are very welcoming of local designers (and out-of-town designers) and have offered playtesting tables for as long as you want free of charge. Run by wonderful folks—it's a great time!

I'd love to go, but it will be hard to swing this year. I might day trip out there, though!

Adirondacon has two main events: ADK Tabletop Day in the spring (the bigger event of the two) and Adirondacon in the fall. Both have gaming libraries and lots of scheduled blocks for bigger game.

Yesss! We should hang out for more than 10 minutes, and maybe even play a game!

Definitely! I should be free most evenings for dinner or games.

Congrats! So cool to see your IGNM games find publishers.

Thank you! It's an overflow-style game called Leaf Blowers. When I have a digital prototype, I'd love to get your input.

My flights are booked for GenCon—my first time back since 2019 (not counting the time I got COVID on day 1 in 2022)!

Also booked train tickets for PAX Unplugged. Besides Adirondacon, these are probably my only cons for the year but I'm excited to see friends and play games!

I adore this game! I'm wrapping up a game inspired by it right now. Hope to show you (and @eanderssonsunden.bsky.social!) someday.

Got a chance to try out a prototype of Walkable City from @drawnonward.bsky.social. The prototype and draft rules I had weren't finished yet so there were questions here and there, but I really loved working with other players to build out transit options for the residents. 🧵

Whoa, that is awesome news!

It was more 80% / 20% for me. When it was clever and rewarding it was such a rich experience. The rest of the time, it felt like I was being mocked or just pulling a lever on a slot machine that eats time and spits out empty rooms.

These look incredible—would definitely wear.

Three text boxes reading:

Cube Pusher:
I think a fun challenge I’d like to try is to make a Eurogame that’s as simple as possible, but I’m having a hard time pinning down a solid definition of what a Eurogame actually is. What elements would you say must be present in a game in order for it to be considered a Euro game?

Humor Hawker:
I’m working on a card game with humor at its core but with strategic gameplay. I imagine most of the cards having jokes and illustrations in the finished version. How do I go about playtesting and prototyping? Should I just test the core mechanisms, or should I create some of the jokes from the start?

Unlikely Customer:
When testing someone's game, for which you are not a likely customer, should you approach it the way YOU would typically play such a game or should you take on the persona of "someone who would probably like this kind of game" and try to do what THAT person would likely do?

My first attempt at naan turned out pretty great! We enjoyed it with some (not homemade) masoor daal.

That's two from-scratch bakes I've learned this year. Next up are tortillas!

I recently saw someone try to make the "if a game is good, it'll find an audience" argument the other day and I've been mad about it since.

Success is never guaranteed. You can do everything you can to improve your chances, but I wish more people recognized that quality work ≠ guaranteed audience.
