Crashpelts were developed by a species long ago as living crash-survival suits. As such their skins are incredibly puncture resistant, and are filled with a substance they've dubbed "Life-Jelly". Life-Jelly is incredibly shock-absorbent, oxygenated, and can sustain anyone suspended in it effectively indefinitely. It also has an unfortunate tendency to cause long-term occupants to swell/bloat up. An unintended side effect I assure you.
