How many stars are in the sky? Just about enough to reflect Eileen Walsh’s brilliance.
Bravo on the most astonishing performance and endurance, and huge congratulations to the #corkmidsummer team for bringing this unique work to Ireland. & kudos to the 100 volunteers. #TheSecondWoman

Be proud.

Proud of whom you love.
Proud of who you are.
Proud of who you are becoming. Because your journey is your power.

Always remember: Europe is your ally. I am your ally.

This week and every week.

Be proud. Always.

I’m so sorry. Your frequent, loving mentions of him make me pretty sure your Dad was cut out of the same cloth as mine, also an old school rural vet & gentleman. Be kind to yourselves at this sad time.

Excellent case, love that it’s been immortalised in music. (However although not something one might do, it’s not strictly true that one couldn’t eat a Jaffa Cale with a fork). #pedantry

I love them too! Bold, brave, clever & beautiful - it’s not their fault we’ve driven them inland in search of food!

Thank you! I’m already rapt, and you’ve inspired me to (most uncharacteristically) make a New Year’s resolution; to keep a proper log of books read in 2025…..am already noting your work in translation in particular & looking forward to your fiction choices. Happy New Year!

Past Present Future Podcast (@ppfideas.bsky.social) The History of Ideas Podcast. Every Thursday and Sunday with David Runciman. Presented in partnership with the LRB. Wherever you get your podcasts. Find us at 🔗 www.ppfideas.com

As everyone sleeps, I’m relishing this morning’s @ppfideas.bsky.social drop - Davis Runciman’s superb analysis of #SpikeLee’s 1989 Do the Right Thing. A tense, highly political film, of its time yet timeless, it’s magnificent & among my favourites of all time. podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/p...

As a pretty committed Guinness drinker, I agree completely - tastes great & far superior to other zero alcohol alternatives.

I’m firmly in the early morning camp, it’s just how my body clock works. Do I perform better than people who get up a bit later? No! We just have different rhythms. There’s a lot to be said for interactive work during core hours only, & then let everyone work as early/late as they like either side.

Advising governments about science is essential but difficult. So train people to do it A great scientist doesn’t necessarily make an effective science adviser — but schooling and practice can help to bridge the gap.

“It is easy for researchers to gripe that politicians don’t understand science. A better response is to learn about politics and policy, and to get involved.” www.nature.com/articles/d41...
