I've been trying to tell people this for years! This was my reality during and shortly after my college years, as I was never taught the skills needed to find jobs, and had to teach myself. I can't even imagine how much harder it is for those who are unable to work at all!

I wish more people understood the terror disabled people face when dealing with housing insecurity, poverty and unsafe caregivers.

Many in the community are forced to rely on abusive people for survival.

It shouldn’t be this way.

We desperately need more support & resources.

One thing that's been frustrating me INTENSELY this last few years is a pattern of brilliant Autistic autism researchers, doing important & fascinating work, struggling to get jobs in academia, or being pushed out of jobs they had before.

Most universities seem unable to see how valuable they are.

We joke about "saving the bees," but the reality is existential. Agriculture is the bedrock of society, and pollination is the bedrock of agriculture. Break the chain, and we don't just go back to the Stone Age—we go back to the dust.

I just left Facebook and I'm not looking back. I hope to never have a reason to rejoin a third time.

Why are ethics questions always like:
"Why should I pay for someone else's healthcare?"

And not:
"Why are we paying billions to drop bombs on children?"

Humans may be social animals, but we sure as hell aren't meant to make small talk with complete strangers whom we'll never see again. We're meant to build communities in trusted spaces, which are sadly going away. That's why no one wants to engage anymore. #introverts #community

Black and white photo of a shorthaired kitten, mostly white but with some color on his face and head - maybe ginger. He looks very confident and tough. The word “Snowball” is written in tiny white letters at the bottom of the pic.

“Snowball” looks like he smokes unfiltered cigarettes. Postcard from my collection - no date.

Parents: Don't Hide Your Children's Autism Diagnosis From Them — THINKING PERSON'S GUIDE TO AUTISM since I didn’t know about my autism diagnosis, I just assumed there was something wrong with me and that I deserved what I got.

Parents, pls tell your autistic kids they are autistic: "You may think that an autistic child won’t notice they are different than their non-autistic peers; I have not met one autistic person (me included) who hasn’t noticed their difference early in life."

Not a huge fan of using literacy/reading level as a gauge of how intelligent someone is. I work in a library bro. There’s adults that weren’t taught properly. Learning disabilities exist. Some kids don’t enjoy reading. None of this means they’re not smart.

What are some good alternatives to "how are you" that are still polite but more natural?

I prefer "how's it going" - it still shows I care and opens the door for an honest answer. "What's up" is good for more casual conversation.

For my clients, I know that they are like me, also disabled and needing support. So I don't always have to stretch myself that far.

😔

Fake friendliness is exhausting and I will only do it for clients who don't know me better. Coworkers can learn to deal; I've told them a million times that I'm introverted and neurodivergent. I can't keep it up for both them and the public.

(I have more leeway working for the government).

Might be a good time to remember that each of us is profoundly annoying to someone.

How about a 4-day workweek where we can get alternate days off, so not everywhere is jam packed from Friday night through Sunday?

Giving everyone the same work schedules is what makes places so overwhelming for some people.

This is why I like going to hole-in-the-wall salons with owners who don't speak much English. Also their prices are better and their services are of great quality. They always honor my favrite Louise Brooks haircut.
