Well, isn't that a coincidence (or is it?): it's written by the former director of the research institute I'm working at now :)
Thank you for this!

Danke, Joschka! Das ist nett!
Vielen Dank :)
Many thanks!
This sounds good, thank you! :) I will have a look in the library here soon (first I need to survive this talk ๐ซ )
Oh, of course, how could I not think of this! Thank you :)
Merci, David ! C'est gentil ! :)
Vielen Dank! Mal schauen. Wenn ich nervรถs bin, geht's immer schnell bergab mit meinem Deutsch ๐
Thank you, Stephen! I have indeed spotted it in the library here :) Turner's work usually doesn't disappoint, so hopefully there's something useful in there this time too.
Thank you! :) I don't, unfortunately.
Powerpoint Slide of my upcoming talk "The Arts of Screwmaking in the Early Modern German-Speaking Lands," including an early modern clock (left) and a Torquetum (right).
Tomorrow! I'm nervous about the German Q&A portion of the talk, but excited to be able to get feedback from experts in the field! โค๏ธ ๐ฉ #HistSci #HistTech #HistSTM #EarlyModern #MaterialCulture ๐๏ธ ๐๏ธ
Thank you, I'll have a look at that one :)
Looks like a great source, though I wonder if it discusses how a clock works and what its main components are? I cannot really tell from the Table of Contents...it looks more like a history of clocks, but I could be wrong?
N.B. I am looking for a book written by a recognized specialist in the field.
#SkyStorians I am looking for an introduction to horology/clocks in English (specifically, on how mechanical clocks work & what their main components are). I have a German book that's been great so far, but I want t be sure I translate the technical terms correctly. Any recommendations? #HistSTM ๐๏ธ ๐ฐ๏ธ
Science collections curators, beware : a significant portion of historical microscope slides could be containing arsenic from the green pigment of their paper labels!

Case in point: I just googled Fronleichnam.....
At this stage, I only have aspiring levels of expertise ๐ซ
I won't (considering it's my primary focus). I'm more worried about the pins.
Haha, neither can I. The Deutsches Museum is open on many holidays, including on Easter Sunday and Monday. So, naturally, I figured they'd be open on Karfreitag too....
.................
This is my third year back in Germany (after having lived here for 6, from 2012-2018), and I still forget their holidays. I never learn.

I had to google the English, since I only knew the German, which is much easier, and way better: Schnecken ๐ (snail)
My favorite part was when even the master clockmaker (also the conservator) whom I'm working with marvelled at the fact that the fusee ๐ was made in one pieceโas opposed to, what's easier, in various parts โค๏ธ
It is so incredibly humbling. I feel like a complete idiot, knowing next to nothing about how clocks actually work or how on earth these artisans would have made all of these elements by hand.
Yesterday, we started fully disassembling the 16th century clock ๐ฐ๏ธ. After three hours, we were at about 45 components, and we're nowhere near done yet ๐คฏ

Haha, looks like there's a gap waiting to be filled there, Dominik ๐
No need to be sorry, your suggestion might still be useful ๐
Thank you!
Thanks so much! ๐
