I just talked about viral pandemics in class today. 🤦🏻♀️

Raw hot dog 🌭
My day is made. Someone threw a hot dog into my lecture.
Every year I talk about microbes that survive on dissolved organic matter and how it just diffuses to them and how that would be like me living off of the hot dogs that float into my room.
It took 10 years but one finally did!!! 🤣
Real ones know why I love NIST with all my heart.
A wild thread:
490 million years ago, the seafloor which would become the city of Baltimore was a serpentinite-hosted hydrothermal vent complex.
Those vents laid the ultramafic structures that would, in 1812, be discovered as America's first chromite mine.
London Falling?
That seems typical of all institutions.
Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.
Bless you for doing the union data work. The same thing happens here. It kills me that as higher Ed institutions we mostly run on vibes and not data.
I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.
There needs to be a giant billboard in every major American city that touts this. In any other era except this suicidal science administration, this would be a miraculous, wondrous thing.
Yes. I’m a named professor and now associate director of a marine field station at a R1 university. And I love reality TV. It’s so much better than reality.
I went to dinner w the collaborators from field work. The taco place had dirty sodas. They didn’t know what they were. I was like “I can see who is not watching the secret lives of Mormon wives”. I feel like I need a blog where I explain pop culture to academics.
Sounds like UD undergraduates.
Geez I got out a semester early. Saved so much!
Note says I feel like an ecotherm right now
Notes I pass in seminar.
I did not dress for air conditioning today.
Come to the movie premiere at 2pm Wednesday next week. Please RSVP. Link to that and the trailer in article www.bozemandailychronicle.com/news/wild-th...
Y’all I bought a crate strapping kit. I’m gonna be a total freight shipping BOSS BITCH. j/k let’s hope I don’t need a pallet jack at pickup. At least I found one on campus.
Pizza on a dock
Today in fieldwork - pizza delivery to the dock
"I entered in good faith, working with the mining company to help determine whether or not deep-sea mining at Solwara I could be conducted with minimal harm to the marine environment. I exited convinced that there is no viable path forward for hydrothermal vent mining, anywhere in the ocean."
It’s bringing back the trauma of old French dudes swearing that Asgard don’t exist.
Was a good day in that everything we threw into the ocean we got back 💪
Oh I lived in PA long enough to appreciate both, but sadly we have no Sheetz near us now :(
The battle here is between Wawa and Royal Farms!
Field work reminded me - order delivery thru the Wawa app gets you a free DoorDash delivery! Got 5 hoagies delivered to the dock today! 💪
Omg I love this
As one of my projects is about to start major field deployments, I was unpacking a crate today, unscrewing the 2x4s inside, muttering to myself “I have a PhD in biochem. I work with microliters”. Remind me that as I deploy the ADCP tomorrow. I have gone so far astray.
Can't not re-share this article I wrote for @teenvogue.com back in 2017, when Christina Koch had only been an astronaut for about two years. Spoiler: she's always been incredibly cool and inspiring, what a joy of a human!

It’s clear that American movie audiences are hungry for one thing: escaping earth and hurtling into an eternal cosmic void
This is Sadie. She was finally reunited with her human, astronaut Christina Koch, after her mom’s voyage around the moon took her the furthest any human has ever been from their dog. She can't wait to hear all about the universe. 14/10 (IG: astro_christina)
