So I could focus my loredumping on the parts that were truly new, like how Ramses III's harem was a cabal of powerful wizards he'd ritually murdered to store their magical energy in his body, transcend death and ascend to godhood, but was killed by his last surviving wife just before he succeeded.

I didn't have to explain who those people and places were: *the players already knew!* The stakes were evident from the get-go.

Someone had murdered Houdini, turned his body into an automaton using a clockwork brain, and used it to steal the sarcophagus of Ramses III from the British Museum. Then she took it to the top of Big Ben, ate the mummy (because this is Victorian/Edwardian England) and started a zombie apocalypse.

This is why *alternate history* is my favorite type of TTRPG setting.

My latest adventure, set in 1902 London, started with a supposedly fake séance at Arthur Conan Doyle's, where the medium accidentally summoned the real ghost of Harry Houdini.
