It has taken over five years of murderous chaos for Republican voters to start to see what was obvious all along: that Donald Trump should not be trusted with a box of matches, let alone the most powerful office on Earth. That's the power of propaganda for you.

"In the place of problem-solving technology, companies have jumped on successive bandwagons like NFTs, the metaverse, and LLMs. What these all have in common is that they are not built to really solve a market problem. They are built to make VCs and companies rich."

(And it's obvious this whole argument was a tentpole for your Arab-baiting there but I'm not going to entertain it, sorry not sorry.)

The bare minimum definition of a republic is pretty conservative, yes. We've had lots of reactionary republics in the last 2000+ yrs but it likely still comes across as clever if you also think it was clever to say slaves are 60% human for accounting purposes.

Meanwhile, in Commonwealth countries:

They're just comfortable being corrupt, is all

We seem very comfortable with ensuring that our candidates pass corruption tests, in the form of gobs and gobs of money from lobbies designed to kill any possibility of legislation on widely popular positions. Is that what's wrong with "purity"?

I've been thinking about the backlash Marie Kondo got and I think part of it was not just that she was saying "buy less shit" she was explicitly say "only buy what actually makes you happy" and in a nation of conspicuous consumption it pissed people off.

I never want to be a killjoy so I won't get in the way of people dancing in the streets when he drops dead but I think one reason everyone is so thirsty for it is we tacitly understand that to be the only consequence he'll ever face. Which sucks! There should be way more consequences

Standing in a drugstore in downtown Los Angeles when the first rain in months (years?) burst out of the sky all at once. A crowd of people rushed in to buy ALL the umbrellas. Shortly thereafter I was on a bus to LAX where I saw South LA dancing in the streets, the golden hour crowned with rainbows.

I have not followed every contour of the debate underlying this and would absolutely read something that narrates and dissects it.

From my narrow frame of reference (energy insecurity), more people are increasingly less well off. The estimate is larger and worse.

NASA’s Orion spacecraft captures the Moon and the Earth in one frame during the Artemis II crew’s deep space journey

Artemis II has been a much needed celebration of science, competency, and humanity.

But reminder: the White House is proposing cutting NASA’s budget by billions.

If you’ve loved watching our astronauts, don’t forget to call your representatives and urge them to keep funding science.

You cannot shout "fire, fire, fire! the house is on fire!" in other words fascism/authoritarianism/DANGER and then do nothing to put out the flames or get the people out. What you do in always a louder message than what you say.
