Yes. "Independent Senator Yuen Pau Woo said Canadians expect the federal government to say whether or not the use of force is legal"
Posts by Natasha Tusikov
Govt's use of GenAI is already causing mistakes (PR wrongly denied by immigration). Robodebt scandal in Australia from an automated debt recovery program caused suicides & wrongfully imposed debts. That's Canada's future.
Reminder that Alligator Alcatraz is a money maker for Canadian company GardaWorld. There should be a ban on Canadian companies profiting from American fascism, but Carney won't do that.

Screenshot of email. ISED logo at the top. Text of email: "On behalf of the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, thank you for your email of March 30, 2026, sharing submissions received by the People’s Consultation on Artificial Intelligence. Minister Solomon appreciates receiving these submissions and is encouraged by your engagement on this important matter. Again, thank you for forwarding this input from Canadians to him, and please accept our best wishes on his behalf. Sincerely, Executive Correspondence Unit"
Received this morning. Minister Solomon can officially no longer pretend not to know about the open letter, its 160+ (now 275+) signatories, or the People's Consultation on AI, its submissions, & those who participated in it! 🎉 (nb I erased the greeting which was just my name) #PCAI
"AI in education can meet every child where they are."
I do not like what I'm hearing when the PM makes these vague mentions of education. Not at all.
Reading through more QTs of that Carney clip on AI, QTs which I'm generally in agreement with, makes me think that in reaching for non-hopelessness, I struck too measured /diplomatic a note in my own response (in the first half, anyway) 😓 Would highly recommend Blayne's thread here:
Mark Carney has been in power for a year. His government's stated policy is to minimize regulation on AI. He rushed an AI consultation that privileged business interests, not Canadian values. Experts in its social effects were sidelined into a consultation that was summarized by AI.
The US-Iran war was the first major test of Carney's theory of international politics as elaborated at Davos: that international law is over and all that remains is raw power. His original, wholehearted support for Trump's illegal war was its purest expression. And it backfired spectacularly.
Air strikes by either #Israel or the #USA have destroyed #Iran 's #WHO -affiliated Pasteur Institute for vaccination and infectious disease research, just days after another health research centre was hit. This is deliberate, criminal and evil.

#Canada denied entry to a pro- #Palestine Member of the European Parliament, apparently because she has been denied entry to #Israel, but allows Israeli military officials to give talks in schools, even as Israel conducts #WarCrimes as official policy...

In using "AI" to replace rather than complement workers, Mark Carney is setting Canada up for a repeat of the CFIA listeria debacle that led to the deaths of three people.
Expect multiple versions of that, and scandals like Australia's Robodebt.

The Chinese version of Blayne Haggart and Natasha Tusikov’s book, The Nee Knowledge: Information, Data and the Remaking of Global Power.
Look what came in the mail yesterday!
Nice to know that @ntusikov.bsky.social’s and my book on the global political economy of knowledge (data, IP) and how it’s transforming society will now have an even wider readership.
Adult industry workers - from content creators to escorts - have bank accounts closed without warning + financial services unjustly denied over their profession.
Why is legal, consensual work targeted for debanking in 🇨🇦?

Good editorial: Regulate AI chatbots dispensing medical diagnoses by requiring a license. Medical AI chatbots are operating w/o regulation Canada, & patients are being harmed. Better to go further & completely prohibit this dangerous, unaccountable tech.

Contra Andrew Phillips, Carney has been *extremely* clear on where he and his government stand both on trading off Canadians’ individual security for an Indian trade deal, and on supporting a Trump’s illegal war. It’s just that Phillips and others don’t want to believe him.
Not a single word about international law—these attacks are clearly, unambiguously illegal.
Not a single word about sovereignty—Carney’s supposed bedrock value, as claimed in Davos.
No concern about Iran being attacked by the US while pursuing diplomacy—as Canada embarks on existential USMCA talks.
WIN!!! ✊ Just got news SFU has decided NOT to renew its contract w/ @hootsuite.com. Our university made the right choice, choosing not to be associated with a tech company aiding and abetting fascism in the US.
4. Join European efforts that are exploring actual digital sovereignty like alternatives to Zoom (like France's Visio) & open-source alternatives to Microsoft (like the Netherlands is doing). Instead Canada is doubling down on data centres & chatbots.

3. Carney says to work with like-minded democracies but signed an MoU with the (non-democratic) UAE & $70 billion trade deal to develop AI. www.canada.ca/en/innovatio...
2. Craft a digital & AI strategy that strengthens digital sovereignty. Working with Microsoft & other US tech giants won't help us. Microsoft 'pledges' to protect our data but Microsoft has admitted, they cannot protect data if the US govt wants it.

New from me: Here's how Carney puts his Davos speech into action. 1. strong public support for the ICC, which Canada helped establish. Trump is attacking Canadian ICC judge Kimberly Prost, who is shut out of the banking system & blacklisted by US tech firms

This is decent journalism but it’s not great. It’s the 20th+ piece that I read from varied outlets that don’t mention the fact that self-regulation is the norm. Canada’s trade strategy welcomes American tech then lets the sector regulate itself. Why is this context always missing?
One of the reasons that the Carney government’s been caught flat-footed on AI governance is that their hand-picked AI panel and their overall, rushed, AI-summarized Potemkin Consultation was designed to minimize and exclude critical pro-regulation experts.
Great article on (overstated) fears of security & privacy risks to Canadians from Chinese EVs by Guillaume Beaumier in @policyoptions.irpp.org. Canada needs updates rules, including on privacy, to deal w/ all EVs, not just Chinese ones.
policyoptions.irpp.org/2026/02/chin...
What a surprise that AI tools built on theft & deception won't voluntarily change their business models. PM & AI Minister, this is where you act like a govt & actually regulate. Don't settle for industry 'transparency' & voluntary best practices. Set binding rules.

Excellent article: US sex workers organising to protect their digital rights, pushing back against sweeping contracts that would sign over their likeness (& IP) to employers. AI models of workers could be created for ads, products, or porn, but without their workers' knowledge or consent.
