This photo will be ubiquitous from today through Taiwan's 2028 presidential election.
I am honored that Andrew Nathan reviewed my book for
China Books Review! "Contested Taiwan" is featured in great company with fellow Taiwan books by J. Michael Cole and Eyck Freymann!

I'm quoted in @cnn.com with @williamyang120.bsky.social discussing the anxieties around contemporary US-Taiwan and Cross-Strait relations.

I'm featured in this NBC News report discussing Taiwanese public opinion on the PRC and USA:
www.nbcnews.com/video/taiwan...
Quoting in agreement with Josh Wilkes:
“It's at least technically left open that she could go to Beijing and not meet Xi I think? Not that this seem likely, but it would appear to be a piece of leverage left in place over the next week.”
So many of us in Taiwan won/lost a bet today over the “will they won’t they” of it all 😂
Confirmed on 人民日報
The KMT party chair will meet with Xi. This could be huge not just for the upcoming local elections, but also KMT internal politics for their 2028 presidential nominee.
All eyes and ears on how Taiwanese voters receive this meeting and its outcome.

Important context: he can still appeal, there’s a chance he doesn’t go to jail, but this is certainly a message-sending initial ruling…
1. Ko can no longer run for president
2. It clears a path for 黃國昌 to fully control the TPP
3. It will mobilize the TPP base of support like crazy
4. The DPP base of support will celebrate this outcome, KMT/TPP will use this to further claim DPP abuse of power
Huge breaking news: Ko Wen-Je sentenced to 17 years in prison.
This will have huge implications for the future of Taiwan’s domestic politics.

My book was reviewed in Global Asia by @jamesbaron.bsky.social! Thank you for the thoughtful review!

"Chinamaxxing" isn't a harmless trend, but an inherently racist concept that perpetuates ethnic stereotypes and cultural appropriation. "Chinese" is not a monolithic identity, and it is a damn shame that embracing ethnic identity is becoming an internet fad for white people (again).
The first review of my book is out in @asianstudiesreview.bsky.social! Thank you so much @sanhochung.bsky.social for the kind commentary!

Hey everyone in Vancouver at @asianstudies.org! I’m doing an author meet and greet TODAY at 12:30 at the @uwapress.uw.edu booth! Please come say hi!
Seriously amazing findings in this paper, congrats to the authors (the paper is free to read!)
Brilliant new work, these findings will challenge assumptions about how much Taiwanese people care about defending offshore islands:
"Respondents’ approval for defending offshore islands...was statistically indistinguishable from their average approval for defending Taiwan proper."
Wow, what a huge honor! Thanks Lev! I look forward to listening, having read your book and know it is timely, empirically rich and critically important as we work to ensure democratic resilience in Taiwan.
I was invited on the @NATSAconf podcast to talk about my book "Contested Taiwan" and to put it in conversation with another Taiwan studies classic- I picked @josephwongut.bsky.social's "Healthy Democracies," and try to connect Taiwan's contested status to healthcare!
