Record year for Scotland’s tallest bird after return from extinction

Last year, a total of 10 pairs fledged nine chicks, up from six pairs in 2024.

It's a remarkable return for a remarkable bird, with record breeding success across other areas of the UK, too.

A photograph of a Common Crane looking towards the camera with the words: "Record year for Scotland's tallest bird!"

The Crane, Scotland's tallest bird, had a record breeding season in 2025!

After going extinct in Scotland due to habitat loss and hunting around 400 years ago, Cranes naturally recolonised an area of Aberdeenshire and first attempted breeding in 2012.

An Orkney Vole sits nibbling a blade of grass

📢 Some great news from Orkney!

A new report shows Orkney Vole abundance last spring was the highest it's been since efforts to remove invasive non-native stoats began.

This small, elusive vole is found nowhere else and is threatened by the arrival of stoats (in 2010).

Scottish Government publishes final Climate Change Plan. Is it enough? - Stop Climate Chaos Scotland Scotland’s routemap to net zero has shortfalls, but all parties, people and business must pull together to achieve the brightest future for everyone, campaigners say.

TODAY: @Scotgov has published its long awaited finalised Climate Change Plan for 2026-2040. But what changes have they made since the draft we analysed in January, and will it make a difference? 👇

Scottish parliament building and Calton Hill from the Crags.

Scotland's final Climate Change Plan is here. 📢

It's disappointing not to see more done to cut emissions in heating & agriculture.

To protect people & nature, we need more ambition. At the upcoming election, every party must set out clear plans for a fair transition for workers & communities. 🌍

Scotland’s new Climate Change Plan is out, with action now, but no clear, credible path for what comes next, risking too much reliance on unproven tech like carbon capture.

Faster cuts, funded fairly, mean cleaner energy, stable bills, and a fairer Scotland - something all parties should commit to.

Scotland’s new emissions strategy ‘too reliant on science fiction’, critics say UK Climate Change Committee voices concern over Scotland’s progress on decarbonising buildings and reliance on unproved technologies Scotland has finally produced realistic short-term plans on cutting its climate emissions, but there is “real concern” about the credibility of its overall strategy, the UK’s climate policy watchdog has found. Nigel Topping, the chair of the UK Climate Change Committee, said there were “flashing amber lights” about the quality and seriousness of some of the Scottish government’s medium- and long-term proposals to reach net zero by 2045. @thecccuk.bsky.social have published a report on Scotland's climate progress.

It echoes our calls for stronger, faster action on home heating, greener transport & eco-friendly agriculture.

Without this the new Climate Change Plan will not be credible.

Climate advisors warn the Scottish government lacks a credible plan to cut farming emissions. Agriculture is a major driver of climate change, and farmers and crofters need real support and funding to shift to sustainable practices.

What a win for nature!

Scotland is the first UK country to have Swift bricks in law – a lifeline for this threatened bird. And, for the first time ever, the Scottish Government must set legally binding nature recovery targets.

Thanks for helping make history with a strong Natural Environment Bill.

This is a real milestone moment for nature, as the Act will bring in high-level statutory targets for nature restoration, supporting the efforts of many people across Scotland who work incredibly hard to protect and restore our natural environment.
