Curious about tick virology? Read my latest piece in @uk.theconversation.com where I explain findings of my latest research article www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Hope it will helps people to understand the importance of studying tick and their pathogens #ScienceforAll #WomenInScience #Arbovirose

Really enjoyed working with MSc Science Communication student Hannah to produce this video as part of her summer project. It's a great opportunity to look at science from a different perspective. Great work Hannah!

Tis the season ....
A pupil in a white polo shirt looks down a microscope in a molecular biology lab. There are blue poster boards behind them with information about different parasites and other microorganisms
Two pupils in blue school jumpers stand in front of a suspended computer monitor showing a microbiological safety cabinet in virtual reality. One of the pupils wears a headset and holds a controller in each hand while the other watches what they are doing on the screen
It's been a busy few weeks welcoming pupils from various schools to visit us on campus. Last week we had pupils testing out our Disease Diagnostic Virtual Reality app, while this week pupils have joined us in the teaching lab to learn about infectious microorganisms

For those of you who approached me at @microbiologysociety.org #Microbio25 (and anyone else interested!!), this is your last chance to apply for our PDRA position. Come join us in Glasgow!
Prof Ed Hutchinson stands in a seminar room wearing a VR headset and holding VR controllers
And @socialinfluenza.bsky.social demoing the 'Meet the viruses' VR app and 'Visible viruses' AR app during the Education and Outreach interactive showcase session (He did let others play with them to!)

Final year Hons student Lucy Hunter (supervised by Leighann Sherry) presenting her work on reducing the amount of plastic used in UG teaching labs as part of her internship project
On the dark stage illuminated with strong lights are two podiums with one person at each. Presenter is on the right and chair on he left. The slide behind them reads 'Embedding equality diversity and inclusion into Biosciences undergraduate curricula though staff-student partnerships'
My colleagues are just awesome! Today @nicolaveitchuofg.bsky.social presented her work on EDI in UG education on behalf of the UofG team and collected an EDI award from the @microbiologysociety.org
Claire stands in her office wearing a black t shirt that reads 'Viruses a century of discovery' with a biohazard symbol
I recently had a clear out and rediscovered my @cvrinfo.bsky.social public engagement t- shirt. So I wore it to yoga. Does that count as outreach?!
Happy International Day of Women & Girls in Science to you all - girls, women & allies that love science and advocate for making it an increasingly diverse and attractive place. Let's imagine a future with more women in science & better research that truly serves and represents us all π@unesco.org
This is a cross-college study involving colleagues from @uofgsii.bsky.social, @uofgsps.bsky.social and @uofglifesci.bsky.social.
π’ New paper klaxon!! Delighted to announce that our study, led by @nicolaveitchuofglt.bsky.social, investigating the use of #VirtualReality to teach practical laboratory skills by-proxy to biology students has been published in Virtual Reality @springernature.com link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Last year saw lots of exciting developments in our collaboration between the University of the West Indes and @uofgsii.bsky.social @uofgsocsci.bsky.social and exchanging ideas on innovative education.

Students stand on mats around the edge of a wooden panelled room. They are wearing VR headsets and holding controllers. On the computer monitor you can see the VR lab they are working in.
First session of the semester in the UofG Multiuser VR suite. Today we welcomed students on the @uofgsii.bsky.social @uofgmvls.bsky.social Diagnostic Technologies and Devices masters course. They are learning how to diagnose a viral infection using qPCR in VR
βIt is really hard for infectious diseases to effectively stop being specialists and move over into a new species. So, when that happens, it is striking and concerningβ β Microbiology Society member, Ed Hutchinson, in an important article published in the Guardian yesterday -

This is so lovely!! What an awesome idea to think creatively about your work. And even better to do it as a team π

One of the nice things about teaching so late in the Semester is having the pick of teaching spaces. For our final session of the year we're in one of the awesome @uofgasbs.bsky.social active learning spaces. Added bonus of checking out how the construction of our new lab building is going ποΈπ·ββοΈπ¦Ί
