Working on wrapping up Eversaga's mage class by doing the wizard class path. Wizard's tricky; it's a blank slate in fantasy. I tried spellbook and implement-focused powers, but it didn't feel right. Now I'm trying build-a-path where you construct a thesis from bonus talents. Feels much better! ๐

Since Eversaga is a modern setting, I wanted its practice to be at least vaguely understood, or at least codified a little bit. I think it ends up being neat because it creates roleplay opportunities and character concepts, plus I get to mess around with spellcasting design!
Other examples include myxgick, which is mixing combination of items together for the magic they create, or occultivation, which is guiding magic through your body to create a spell. In Eversaga, magic works by guiding energy (called mana) through a path (called a seal) to make the spell.
One thing I'm trying with Eversaga's magic is called spellcrafts. They're practices for casting spells rather than power sources. For example, if you practice arcangement you know how to release magic from the environment through arranging items in a particular patterns/orders.
I find it strange that an entire group of people would use a name for themselves that implies that they're less than another group of people. The idea with hauflin is that it sounds like "halfling" enough that you can go, "Oh, halfling is just a mean play-on-words for their actual name."
I've always felt that shorties got a bad deal when it came to their names. In Eversaga, I'm using dvergr and hauflin instead of dwarf and halfling. Dvergr is the actual Old Norse word for their mythological creature, while hauflin feels better to me from a worldbuilding standpoint. (1/2)
Exactly what Spell Flourish does changes based on your tradition; for some, it's just a way to get your metamagician bonus to your spell rolls. For others, special spellsurge abilities you gain can only be triggered when you Cast a Spell affixed with Spell Flourish. It's a neat little design space.
One of the core ideas I have for the Eversaga RPG is a type of ability called affixes. You "affix" them to other abilities, changing their effects. For example, the mage class (which is all about the affix mechanic) can Cast Spells normally, or they can affix Spell Flourish for extra effects.
