Meet the “sickfluencers”: disabled people turn to TikTok for help accessing disability benefits - and the media says they’re scroungers gaming the system.

Twitter didn't gain relevance by being the biggest platform, it gained relevancy through the quality of the content and individuals. The main goal for everyone here should be to encourage global defender, media, and establishment accounts to transition to #BlueSky. That'll provide legitimacy.
The MP said that individuals would still need to be assessed “as having the capacity” and ensure “no one else has coerced them”, saying it is “a very delicate issue”. She added: “I mean, there are people who have said to me – I think my mum would probably say this to me – ‘but surely being concerned about being a burden is a legitimate reason as well, in terms of…?’ “I know I wouldn’t want to be a burden to people, I can say that to you now in the clear light of day. But that’s very different to people saying, ‘I’m doing this because I feel like I’m being a burden’.”
Terribly irresponsible comments from Kim Leadbeater. Fearing being a burden is not a “legitimate reason” to seek an assisted death and the MP proposing the bill should not be musing whether it is. www.msn.com/en-gb/news/u...
1. You think you’ve seen it all. You really have not. I’m a hard-bitten journalist of 39 years’ standing, but details of this story made me shout, weep and slap my head. This week’s column + 🧵

While the bill does make coercion by another person an offence, it does not address the less direct version – ending your life because you feel like a burden, either to the NHS or to your family. Disabled broadcaster Liz Carr has called it “state-level coercion”. Is the omission because Leadbeater felt it was impossible to reliably identify that feeling and thus exclude those people? “It’s very difficult to legislate for emotions, isn’t it? That’s the point,” she replies. “That’s where the robust training programme and the code of practice would come into play… I know some people struggle with this, but we do have to put our faith in medical professionals and lawyers and judges who are making difficult decisions all the time.”
I found this such a telling line from Kim Leadbeater in her @politicshome.bsky.social interview on assisted dying. I imagine there’s some minorities who won’t be reassured by the idea they must just “put faith” in the health and legal system.
Hunts like the Heythrop Hunt are causing chaos on roads, railways, and in neighborhoods. Loopholes in UK law let them get away with it! It's time to pass the Hunting of Mammals Bill and end this recklessness.

Trump alone didn't beat the justice system.
He had help.
It took Oligarchs relentlessly amplifying his lies on their media platforms.
Ethically compromised members of the Supreme Court.
70+ million willing to vote for a convicted felon.
There's a lot to fix. But it can be fixed. It must.
Telegraph article showing man in front of a castle, with headline: my 12th century castle is at risk under labour's tax raid - I'm so angry.
Oh no! We never meant for this to affect ordinary hard-working castle owners.

It is clear from the petition data that huge numbers of the signatures are not genuine
The argument for assisted dying is compelling, not least when high-profile people such as Esther Rantzen and the late Nicholas Dimbleby speak honestly of their fears of the end. “They didn’t suffer” is a natural and common response when someone dies and a quiet admission that some people do. For the unfortunate or unsupported, the final weeks or months of life can involve the deepest pain, indignity and distress. It is a disservice to them to suggest otherwise.
I won’t debate assisted dying on socials but I will be writing this week’s column on it.
In the meantime, here’s the last piece I wrote. And an important note for any reply suggesting acknowledging disabled people’s fears means ignoring terminally ill suffering. amp.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Fuck, and I cannot stress this enough, off.
🔴Jeremy Clarkson, James Dyson and Junk Stats: Is This the Best the Anti-Inheritance Tax Farming Lobby Has to Offer?
How millionaire landowners are using dubious statistics to campaign against the Government’s inheritance tax reforms

MPs are to summon Elon Musk to testify about X’s role in spreading disinformation, in a parliamentary inquiry into the UK riots and the rise of false and harmful AI content
www.theguardian.com/media/2024/n...
Important context here:
● over half of farms are less than 49 acres (20 hectares)
● "a big farm" is 217 acres.
Now let's see who's angry:
● Clarkson farm is 1,000 acres
● Lloyd Webber farms 4,000 acres
● Viscount Rothermere (Mail owner) 4,700 acres
● Dyson owns 36,000 acres
Very noble of Jeremy Clarkson to support the farmers protest. Nothing to do with having
spent £4.25m on a farm to avoid paying inheritance tax.

I would feel easier with assisted dying if proponents admitted “safeguards” are rarely going to be foolproof. Many disabled people are highly aware of the dangers that come with relying on the authorities for your wellbeing. No bill can undo prejudice. www.theguardian.com/society/2024...
