By legislative Act in 1819, all one required to practice law was a license granted by the Alabama Supreme Court. But by an Act in 1821, all one needed was permission of 2/5 of the circuit judges to sign off on the granting of said license. Those 5 circuit judges also served as the Ala. Sup. Ct.
From the Ala. Sup. Ct. & Law Library - George Goldthwaite served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama from January 2nd to January 15, 1856, the shortest tenure of any of Alabama's Chief Justices. He resigned to return to private practice.

Six years ago today, I had the honor and privilege of entering the Heflin-Torbert Judicial Building for the first time as a judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. I extend my gratitude to the voters of Alabama for placing their trust in me for another six year term.

Price was also the first presiding judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals when it was created in 1969.
The appointment was especially significant because the law at the time required that jurors be selected only from male citizens on the voter rolls thus excluding women from service on juries. In 1952, she was elected to the Court and served the State as an appellate judge until her death in 1972.
On January 12, 1951, Annie Lola Price of Cullman became the first woman to serve on an Alabama appellate court when she was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor "Big Jim" Folsom. (1/2)

On June 11, 1879, Moore, now living in Lowndes County, Mississippi, applied for a passport, along with his wife, with the intention of traveling abroad. Whether he returned to British Guiana or possibly to Great Britain is a mystery.
He moved to Washington, D.C. where he attend Howard Law School and was among the first graduates of that school. In November of 1871, he was in Mobile, Alabama where he was admitted to the bar after examination in open court.
Moore had come to the United States aboard the ship Koomar on October 19, 1867, landing in the Port of New York. According to the passenger list, Moore, who listed his profession as a school teacher, boarded the ship in London.
From the Alabama Supreme Court & State Law Library … On this date in 1872, Moses Wenslydale Moore, born on February 15, 1841, in Demerara, British Guiana, was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Alabama, becoming the first African-American to be admitted before the Court.
