High of 60 today in Massachusetts and we'll be cycling between 40s/50s with another potential 60 day next week

Completely standard New England weather pattern bouncing between seasons all winter with almost no snowfall

I'd settle for just 9am meetings with all the 8 and 8:30s encroaching on my usual catching up on emails in peace time slot :P

Like the turnout for last month's election in Newton was 27% of registered voters - so we can say of that 27% the majority did support pulling back on zoning for density but less clear as to whether that's really what a majority of residents think or just the subset that showed up off-cycle

That's the tough issue to crack, I'd imagine most people don't have strong feelings either way but the anti-development crowd is dedicated and turns out in force to meetings and off year elections so they end up setting the tone

Roughly - they kept what was needed to meet MBTA Community Act requirements along with Auburndale (due to the CR stop) but removed six villages which were part of the original plan but not on the two rail lines

About 400 more than minimum but 700 less than originally proposed

Yes, approved by the outgoing council 21-2, wide enough margin that the council changes wouldn’t have impacted but it was scaled down partially because of the election results

If you're getting started in security and find the raw number of subjects daunting, that's because security is a vastly larger field than it was even just a few years ago.

For context, when I took my Security+, IAM wasn't even an acronym. Go broad or go deep, but keep learning.

This must be that “more value” Netflix keeps touting as their excuse for constantly raising rates

A brief and partial history of generative AI on social media In recent years, misleading uses of AI-generated content have become increasingly common on social media platforms (and elsewhere on the Internet)

Over the last ~5 years, deceptive uses of generative AI have become increasingly pervasive on social media. Here's a brief and partial history of the topic from the perspective of a social media researcher (specifically, me).

Watching OpenAI getting ready to give X a run for it's money in the corporate collapse speedrun category is indeed pretty wild

The corporate equivalent of Wagner's one day rebellion - just need Microsoft to announce they brokered a truce between Altman and the board and that there was in fact no attempted coup, nothing to see here!

Ah, yeah you're right, had Waban mixed up with the Elliot/Woodland stops, it's included at the very start of the Waban-Newton Center green line corridor which is part of the MBTA communities zoning

Not thrilled to see Chestnut Hill and Waban conveniently excluded as with the new council those are probably going to be dead in the water but OK with including Auburndale if that ensures we can finally get the commuter rail stops properly rebuilt

Newton hasn't rejected it yet - the city council is having an off-cycle meeting tonight to debate and "likely" vote on at least the changes needed to meet state law

What might get cut out are the village centers that aren't a part of meeting state requirements

I'm going with MiB logic - a baby that's intelligent enough to hold a conversation while skydiving and has the motor skills to operate the parachute is obviously looking to start some shit

Either that or he's been possessed by Chucky and this is rouse so he can cut your parachute after you open it

I had to have two done earlier in the year, taking donor tissue from the roof of the mouth is still a thing but uh.. They used -plenty- of novocaine, like six or seven jabs to make sure anything and everything in the area was numb

No local anesthetic sounds like straight up nightmare fuel

Steam deck is pretty nifty between the design and Arch-based OS but every time I think about getting one I glance at my Switch which pretty much lives in it's dock 24/7 :P

Still running a dedicated desktop for gaming paired with a laptop for non-gaming stuff, thought about merging them but not a fan of bulky gaming laptops so the tower stays

The "We really don't want to offer this but we're being forced to so fuck you" pricing strategy paired with some A-tier smoke blowing on the free with ads pitch

Curious to see just how ad free the experience is - eg. does this include all the sponsored content that isn't PI data based?

A lot of security is learning how to analyze failure, not be crippled by it, and figuring out how not to fail as hard the next time.

Be real though - it's usually a thankless job and you'll always be playing catch-up with new technologies, so high stress and lifetime learning.

Doesn't that.. completely defeat the purpose of having the police robot in the first place? When you need five police guarding the robot that's supposed to be there in place of said police officers

Feel like we've got a solid solution to "more shit to carry" with device passkeys, just needs a bit of time to build up support and streamline. Legal side is going to be the tricky one to try and solve

2 years ago 0 0 0 0

If it's any consolation, us security practitioners aren't too keen on that either

The challenge is one part making sure all the supporting controls are in place to not need to care about password rotation and one part changing corporate IT policy being comparable to electing a new house speaker

And on the headscratcher side, from the same report apparently part of their malware investigation process was to.. Scan the IT member's laptop with the -free- version of Malwarebytes?

Okta Support System incident and 1Password | 1Password Blog We detected suspicious activity on our Okta instance that we use to manage our employee-facing apps. We immediately terminated the activity, investigated, and found no compromise of user data or other...

1Password's official statement and incident report on their security incident via the Okta breach

On the positive side, it seems like the attacker was still in the reconnisance phase when they were detected and cut off before they could do anything more

1 - This isn't going to do shit to actually stop minors from accessing whatever online content they bloody well feel like

2 - This -will- make future platform data breaches much worse with the biometric/national ID data needed for age verification

3 - VPNs about to get much more popular in the UK

Don’t think I have a violin small enough for this ongoing train wreck of a speaker selection process, plenty of popcorn though

This never happens on the internet, especially not on social media/microblogging platforms :)

X will begin charging new users $1 a year X owner Elon Musk has long floated the idea of charging users $1 for the platform. Now, the team is moving the idea into production.

The notion that charging new users $1 per year will stop bots is laughable.

Once they get federation up and there are some other instances besides bsky.app there should be solid demand for some how-tos

Even now I'd imagine there's a good chunk of content to cover with the custom feed system, just more limited audience with the invite only current state
