The year is 2026 and user ssjlee9 just updated his GameFAQs guide to Pool of Radiance (the 1988 CRPG):

The guide has 393 pages and covers EVERYTHING, from character creation, maps & battles to details in the game's code
The Internet is still alive & wonderful

Ideally I'd like to draw all the sides too but alas my free time is limited so I gotta keep the sprite tasks manageable ๐
Thanks for your input!
Nice, someone suggested icons too! It's one of the options I'm considering now, but I'd like to keep the "immersive" retro crawler aesthetic if possible. It's a good idea to fall back to if all else fails!
Megaten way:
Place events in a special room. Bump the player out when event ends so they can't do funky turns inside.
The EoB way for reference:
Divide the space into 4. Sprites still face you, but their position changes during turning, which masks the odd static feeling when the sprite is centered.
Cons:
- You can only see objects from two corners while standing on them
- You can't place objects at the center
#1 sounds viable! Although it'll lose some of the classic DRPG aesthetic.
Other things like Altars, NPCs, etc will be sharing the same sprite system (and has the same issue) so I'll have to rule out the other options for now.
Thanks, I'll go ponder on this more! ๐ง
This is new to me ๐ I only do 1 pixel length ones at most
haha yea! EO being 3D can spin around it nicely too if they wanted ๐
So this has been buggin me for a bit. When you rotate around an object, the sprite remains facing you at all times. It feels odd somehow. What's a good solution without having to draw all sides of the object? ๐ค
Megaten or EoB way is a bit restrictive so might only use it as last resort.

Colored shadow edges are the best! ๐
That's quick! ๐
Haha kind of! Status Effect system is kicking my ass and causing bugs everywhere. Hopefully I'll finish the combat stuff soon! ๐ช๐

It took 10 months(!!), but I'm finally back to working on the battle system. Reused whatever code I could and linked it to the new dungeon event system. Still lots to do though... enemy AIs, sprites, action/skills, status effects, damage calculations, player deaths, loot drops... ๐ฅด

This song sounds very familiar and triggered nostalgic feelings, but I have no memory of the title ๐ด
