A quote at the Jefferson Memorial, written in copper embeds white granite, green stains showing the age, that reads: “I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind as that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made. New truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”

Visiting DC and came to see this quote at the Jefferson Memorial. I had seen it online once, it resonated with me then, but it especially resonates today as we see the system under obvious strain. Glad for an opportunity to see it in person.

The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module Go now has a built-in, native FIPS 140-3 compliant mode.

We announced the new native Go FIPS 140-3 mode today!

FIPS 140, like it or not, is often a requirement, and I was increasingly sad about large deployments replacing the Go crypto packages with non-memory safe cgo bindings.

Go is now one of the easiest and most secure ways to build under FIPS 140.

Before long you’ll be throwing your kid into dangerous situations they can’t handle then quickly pulling them out to grind XP!

What is the internet for if not for making absurdly niche jokes that somehow find the one person who will get it?

Yeah, I guess the power of internet distribution is such these days that an immature technology can seem mainstream—or at least what used to be mainstream adoption numbers.

I think LLMs are amazing, I’m just also frustrated at the level of grifting they attract, with people trying to stick them in places they absolutely don’t belong (yet), like tasks that require devs with 20 YOE.

I mean if we’re seriously asking, it’s probably because the President can unilaterally impose tariffs and corporate tax change must go through congress. I’m guessing the whole tariff thing is a test how the whole unitary executive thing might work.

A biblically accurate angel, with eight wings surrounding a ring of eyes, encircling one giant eye. Like Eva, also said to be beyond human comprehension.

Parenthood def changed how I gifted too. My go-to is glass bottles + automatic bottle warmer + automatic bottle sanitizer/dryer…the stuff that worked for me after lots of iteration. Anything to automate when brain is at its least functional!

Parse, don’t validate

Finally understand enough about type systems (functional knowledge) and Haskell (just enough) to fully understand "parse, don't validate."

The idea is simple tho: Attach type system information at the system boundary so those invariants can be reused!

a network thats split up into separate and independent components that can be reused by other parties is just so fucking cool

especially now that were at the point these components can be chained together: you can take blacksky's relay, feed it into appviewlite, and connect that to deer

My son insists on using a kid’s toothbrush like he has at preschool, though we got him an electric one.

Last night we’re brushing teeth together and suddenly he starts insisting on the electric one. I ask why and he hits me with “I want to be like you, daddy!” for the first time.

Still feeling it.

The rode wireless ecosystem is getting nice, too. Have the lavs, but also hand mics, and their mixers have wireless receivers now, so you can build up a very flexible ecosystem for mobile and desktop recording.

Co-sign Rode Wireless lavs. The pro set is really nice. Another option that’s a bit bulkier but more flexible would be a Zoom H5 (or similar) with a shotgun capsule, which would let you add XLR mics for when you want to scale up to a group on-location.

No, I don’t think that’s an option for the wok and personally not the type that goes for engravings.

Thank you—I agree! They live up to the heirloom moniker, though beauty is pain…they’re a bit tough to maintain for an “unseasoned” (heh) cook like myself vs other pans with thick seasoning built up from the factory, but it’s been a fun learning and aesthetic experience!

It is! A splurge for sure.

A carbon steel wok held up against a blue background. The wok’s seasoning has a deep copper color that looks like brush strokes and clouds which give the pan a rustic, painterly feel.

Working on the seasoning to our wok this morning. Between the hammered carbon steel and the strokes of seasoning oil, it looks like a rustic painting!

Somehow, the future is both going to be a dystopian techno sci-fi hellscape AND we're gonna have coal and measles and robber barons and a permanent underclass.
