Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc.

If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

I made a video about this a few years ago when it was just a couple, but it's gotten so much worse the regular storefront is almost unusable. And I struggle to think of that as an accident, it seems like a way of pushing people to seeing Gamepass as the only viable option.

So obviously Xbox is being boycotted for bigger reasons right now, but I just have to say that the Xbox Store over the past couple years has become absolutely flooded with shovel ware crap with AI gen cover art. The browsing experience is miserable.
